I keep getting recently Hedgehogs in my garden, now i have no problem with them except my dog goes stupid around them, barking at them at scratching the grass all around them which A) is damaging my lawn and B) stupid.

I usually pick them up with a spade and gently place them over my fence onto the field / grass behind me.

Could Hedgehogs cause any problem to my dog or cats or are they fine, I know you hear stories about them being covered in fleas etc ?

they also weigh a lot when you stick them on your spade!

I've done my part for extermination, ran over a poor fellow at 60mph on a nsl road yesterday, tried to avoid it but it wasn't worth totalling my car over.

The things are rife with ticks and fleas but I wouldn’t worry too much unless you really want to spend hours blocking every hole in your garden fence.

Just keep shovelling the buggers and you all happy that way.

Cats/dogs can pick up fleas and ticks from anywhere. Just frontline them if they get infested. Never had an issue with our cats getting fleas tbh. Hedgehogs will not harm your pets unless they're stupid enough to get too close to the prickles.

They do often come covered in fleas. I don't think they'd cause any other problem to your pets.

There are ways to kill them if you think it necessary (I believe slug pellets damage them :() but I'd save that as a last resort.

Not sure what else to say really, you could always get in touch with an animal welfare society. There's a couple returned on a Google search.

Look here.

these dam things keep activating the sensor light most of the nigh keeping poor me awake. :(

If your dog is silly enough to stick its nose into a hedgehog, then it deserves what its got coming for it tbh.

He said its damaging his lawn, not itself.

Do you not have a sensitivity guage on it?

I got loads in my street, some old lady use to make them cakes full of nuts and bread and they seem to always come back to her garden and sniff around my back garden and drive. They are fast buggers aswell.

They dont set off the lights but cats do

I once moved one into the field because it got into the garage and it wouldnt come out, picked it up with a spade and I could see a few ticks on it and fleas. :(

Thanks people, No i dont have any intention to harm the hedgehogs, actually just found a web site forum like this but all on hedgehogs, And people have them in there house, living with them and there pets, cats and dogs all getting along nicely with Mr and Mrs Hedgehog , funny old world.

I use front line all the time (every 3 months) on the cats and dogs so they should be fine, ticks, I hate! Really hate removing those darn things, I have a special tool from the vets that removes them, but im not a big fan of ticks at all.

Anyhow, thanks for your replies.

there is i think but the lights positioned that high on the house that its vitually pointing directly down onto the back's, The one on the drive you can position it at an angle so anything floor height is missed.

Remember reading something in the mags that theres a noise thing you can buy that scares cat's and the hedgehogs etc. might be worth investing in.

I love the hedghog that visits our yard, he walks around and I leave dogfood out for him when I see him out and about (never overnight tho as it attracts rats) cool little thing I think there seems to be more of them every year!

Hedgehogs are useful in the garden, they eat all the slugs. Once the pickings aren't so rich though they'll move on. I'd just try to keep the dog away from it.

Your dog is trying to look after you and that's a good thing, but (s)he needs to know that hedgehogs aren't a threat and my first thought was that getting him/her used to them would be good, but having thought about it some more that might be bad for the hedgehog [they might wander calmly up to another nutter of a dog and end up worse off] so I suggest training your dog to walk away from them (also keeps them free from hedgehog flees) Not sure how to do that though sorry. Hopefully some one has some suggestions.

Back garden wildlife is awesome, it rocks that you get it, we get virtually none here in then city :(

They would never do that, they only come out around here after midnight, no dog could hurt a hedgehog, They sense me and the roll up they wait till I go and leg it, I can never find them they just blend into bushes and the dark.

somthing like this might happen....

Dog VS Porcupine
