I downloaded ATI Tool to o/c my X1800XT and used the option for it to find the maximum core clock itself.

It plodded along for a while so I went off and did something else. When I came back the screen was an off-white colour with beige bands down either side with no other display.

I re-booted but the screen just goes a slightly lighter shade of black with no display :(

Is there anything I can do to reset it or is the card knackered?

Stan :)

I was in the middle of doing that when you posted.

Unfortunately, it has had no effect. I have tried the card in both slots to no avail :(

I really can't afford to be buying a new high-end gfx card just now.

RMAing isn't an option as I bought it from here - it would look slightly fishy if I RMAd an X1800XT after posting a thread about breaking one.
I also have a conscience and wouldn't be comfortable doing something like that to a supplier with whom I've had a good relationship over the last couple of years - damn conscience :o

I have an X1600 PRO in my entertainment/multimedia machine. I think I'll use that in the gaming machine and get a cheapo card for the other until I can afford a better one (probably get an X1900XT-X).

Holy ****, you have nearly 60,000 posts!

Do you hold the world record for a forum?!?!

Sorry to hear about your card btw. :(

Charity postcount auction mate - I bought about 56,000 posts last year. Some of the others who won have more than me - I think Brynn has more as he is a dirty spammer and I'm not :p

Thanks for your sympathy re the card - stuff happens. It's just a pity it had to be the good card in my gaming rig  That'll teach me not to be lazy; next time I'll do it manually.

I've had a bit of a search and have found stories of other people having similar problems - although they seem to have got away without it frying their cards. Perhaps this could serve as a warning to others not to trust the auto overclock function in ATI Tool :)

PS: Better edit out the sweary properly, I don't think you can have that word even disguised.

How thoroughly embarrassing.

The card isn't kaputt after all.

I tried a different monitor and it worked fine so I put the old monitor back in, switched it off and switched it back on again (the monitor) and it was perfect.

It never occurred to me that it would have screwed with the monitor :o

Thanks for all the hints though guys - they will come in handy when I have another go later :)

Ye I told you it wasnt broken :D
Similar thing happened to me, I just left the computer off overnight and it worked the morning later, my monitor maybe a little better than yours so it fixed itself!

Indeed you did, I should have listened :o

It is a pretty crappy monitor - it's a cheapo thing I bought elsewhere.
My new VP930 should be arriving from OcUK in the next couple of hours

my offer of a tenner still stands :D

LOL.
I'm sure it does. I think I'll politely decline for the moment though :p

I tried again with ATI Tool and it was useless, it wouldn't go above 650/750 without switching off so I abandoned it and used ATI overdrive instead which goes all the way to 690/800. Temp gets up to about 88 degrees with that anyway so I doubt I would get much more unless I got better cooling for it.

I upped the voltages a little bit but wasn't sure how high would be safe - how high would you say was a safe maximum?

Stan :)

Thanks for that. I will have another try later. Should I up the MVDDC and MVDDQ voltages as well?

I just checked the temperature again and it seems to have settled at 78-79 degrees.

The memory is a wierd one.

Some cards actually benefit from you undervolting the memory and get you higher clocks, whilst for some reason others find higher voltages better. Also with the MVDDQ voltage, never raise that above the voltage of the MVDDC :)

OK. Will have a bit of a tweak later and let you know how I get on.
Thanks for the advice :)
