HELP!! ATI Tool broke my X1800XT

Holy ****, you have nearly 60,000 posts!

Do you hold the world record for a forum?!?!

Sorry to hear about your card btw. :(

Charity postcount auction mate - I bought about 56,000 posts last year. Some of the others who won have more than me - I think Brynn has more as he is a dirty spammer and I'm not :p

Thanks for your sympathy re the card - stuff happens. It's just a pity it had to be the good card in my gaming rig  That'll teach me not to be lazy; next time I'll do it manually.

I've had a bit of a search and have found stories of other people having similar problems - although they seem to have got away without it frying their cards. Perhaps this could serve as a warning to others not to trust the auto overclock function in ATI Tool :)

Stan :)

PS: Better edit out the sweary properly, I don't think you can have that word even disguised.

Neither ATI Tool or ATI Tray tools should ever be left unattended in there oc test modes. Both programs are broken in that the the test image/anim can be completely currupted (ie turned yellow or flashy triangles) and it will say 0 errors found and continue to oc and break the card :/

i only use ATI tool to get the correct temperature readings when overclocking my X1800xt....

i use x1k overclock to actually tweak it as i have read issues as regards ATI tool and the X1800xt....

get a refund cause after a nice bit of overclocking it is a very good card....

cheers :D

How thoroughly embarrassing.

The card isn't kaputt after all.

I tried a different monitor and it worked fine so I put the old monitor back in, switched it off and switched it back on again (the monitor) and it was perfect.

It never occurred to me that it would have screwed with the monitor :o

Thanks for all the hints though guys - they will come in handy when I have another go later :)

Stan

Ye I told you it wasnt broken :D
Similar thing happened to me, I just left the computer off overnight and it worked the morning later, my monitor maybe a little better than yours so it fixed itself!

Indeed you did, I should have listened :o

It is a pretty crappy monitor - it's a cheapo thing I bought elsewhere.
My new VP930 should be arriving from OcUK in the next couple of hours

my offer of a tenner still stands :D
lol

FWIW I would've RMA'd it if it had broken. It's not like you overvolted it, changed the coolers or whatever - whatever ATITool did could easily have been done by ATI Overdrive as well (although its less likely).

LOL.
I'm sure it does. I think I'll politely decline for the moment though :p

I tried again with ATI Tool and it was useless, it wouldn't go above 650/750 without switching off so I abandoned it and used ATI overdrive instead which goes all the way to 690/800. Temp gets up to about 88 degrees with that anyway so I doubt I would get much more unless I got better cooling for it.

88 degrees? Never seen my X1800 XT go above 75!

But if you're using ATi Tool i'd reccomend upping the voltages a bit :)

I upped the voltages a little bit but wasn't sure how high would be safe - how high would you say was a safe maximum?

Stan :)

For 24/7 usage i'd say 1.45 is about the most you'd want.

For short benchmarking runs, anything upto the max 1.575v is alright but for a short period of time.
