Ok, here's the deal: My girlfriend from New York wants to come and stay with me throughout August and I really want her to come. There's one catch though, we're both students and she cannot afford a $700 (Canadian) return flight. We need to get this price down to $500 or lower after tax.

Now, she is actually based in Toronto, Canada which is probably cheapest to fly from you would have thought. But we can't find anything reasonably priced during august. She would be willing to fly at the end of june or fly back at the start of September but she can't stay for anymore than a month and she has to be back for uni in the second week of September.

Air Transat, Zoom and Canadian Affair have proved fruitless. We haven't really tried many of the American airliners but we assumed the canadian option would be cheaper. Possible airports to fly out from include Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and anywhere in New York state or around Boston, MA to any airport in Britain basically.

Can you help us?

Yes, dont fly. Go by train or road.

Has she access to a car? Could you drive down and get her? It's not actually THAT far.

edit: ok ignore my suggestion, your location confused me into thinking you lived in Canada and she was in New York :o

as daft as it sounds Air India are very cheap from NY to Heathrow

I'm lost actually , are u looking for flights between US and CA or to the UK ?

hang on, where are you going from where to where?

You say she is from New york but whats this based in Toronto? Do you want to fly from NYC or Toronto ? and where are you headed ? I am so confused.

edit- i see you want to come to england now........your location totally threw me off, so does all the places.....

Shes ina student house in toronto, thats where she studies and shes there over the summer but she comes from Albany, NY and her brother lives in Boston. hence she can fly out from anywhere in those areas.

I dont care where she lands, as long as its mainland Britain. I'm in Carlisle, I can drive to pick her up from anywhere.

Air India are indeed very cheap (usually) but you get what you pay for - be prepared for huge lines at check-in, dodgy people trying to get you to carry stuff on for them, old planes, no legroom (they tend to go for maximum cattle class seating) and awful food. That was my experience anyway. But they do get you from A to B at a good price :)

BMi are pretty cheap (and offer superb service) and I've flown with them from Manchester to Chicago before.

You're looking for less than £250, and even chartered flights don't go that cheap for cross-continental. My suggestion would be to start working as many hours as she can (and you too if you want to help out), and book the flights on a credit card for now.

Set yourself up a Paypal account and give us the link.

Ill start off by giving you $20.00..

If you can get a few others who are feeling generous you may be able to get her to land nearer to you up there in Carlise!!!

Big mistake.
Never assume anything when it comes to flight prices, it's a good idea to look for special offers on the websites of as many carriers as you can.
American Airlines have some decent prices some of the time, but travelling in August will make it harder to get a bargain.

You could do worse than bobbing into trailfinders and asking.

I got return flights from Manchester via Heathrow to New York for £169 a couple of years ago. Obviously the taxes have gone up since then but I always find them extremely helpful and they always do their best to find the best fare with no obligation to buy.

When I first got together with my other half (1999) it used to cost me about £179 return from London to Boston including taxes. I think it's safe to say that i'll never have it so good again.

Try virgin atlantic, seem to remember some mates of mine went to NY last year quite cheaply, but probably was a different time of the year (can't remember) , worth a check though :)

So where is this paypal account then? I think i have a few quid spare in my account. I know its not much but its a start and i would gladly give you it :)

I would hate to be in your situation; not being able to see a loved one simply because of lack of funds is just plain mean!

I hope you find a cheaper flight :)

Why do people have such stupidly long distance relationships, you get to see each other what? 2-3 months a year tops

Not worth it imo.

Good luck in getting her over here anyway :)
