Hi all,

I went out to my underused car the other night to find the handbrake was binding so hard it just dragged the rear wheels when I tried to move. I've taken the wheel off one side and a bit of tapping wiggling has released the brake from the drum so the wheel will turn freely if I put it back on but the drum is stuck on.

How do I get it off? It should just come straight off shouldn't it? It all looks abit rusty in there but any tips would be great.

Cheers, Lefty

When my handbrake used to stick on my Hyundai I used to stick it in reverse, plenty of revs then bounce it back by lifting the and dipping the clutch. Always released the stuck brakes with a satisfying #clonk#

lordrobs that's worked for me in the past but not this time. The wheels slipped along the ground when I did that last night.

Anyway - I've released both wheels now by taking the wheels off and fiddling around. But I want to remove the drum itself now except it appears to be jammed in place, any suggestions? I am right in thinking it shouldn't be connected to anything, that it just sits between the wheel and the backplate?

Cheers

Also if the handbrake is stuck on then the shoes will be pushing against the drums so expect them to be damn hard to get off.

There might well be a retaining screw so check fo that first. The drum also won't come off until you've completely backed off the brake shoes. They wear a groove into the drum and it won't get past that until the shoe is well out the way.

Bang it plenty of times with a clubhammer and if it still won't budge use a hub puller. It's a godsend using one of them, cheap and does the job every time.
