Help, I've lost money to SEO company

META tags are a very basic and obvious starting point - but content/site design is crucial.
Oh wow, people are going pretty wrong if they're starting with META tags. No meta tag is useful for ranking, the only meta tag worth any time at all is the meta description and even then that's only for click-through purposes.

That really sucks Felix.

Next time you want to get some SEO, you should check the website of the form who wants to do it for you.

I would check in the following ways:

  • Check for URL names(like gord says), names like page1.html etc are a clear indicator that they don't know what they are talking about.

  • You should also check their websites google rank(i always check google, but you can check others).

I normally do this by just looking at the "Page Rank" on my Google Toolbar in Firefox.

If you don't have google toolbar, you can check on this website: http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php

The higher out of 10, the better.

  • Also check that their own website is HTML/XHTML valid at:
    http://validator.w3.org/

if it shows a lot of errors/warnings then they are probably just another scamming website. Most good websites, and almost all legit SEO companies websites nowadays are web 2.0 compliant.

If you find a company which passes all those checks, then I'd still probably google their company name to check some reviews or testimonials.

"Assured Web Developments" failed all of the above checks!
page1.html etc, 0/10 google pagerank, and a shocking 44 errors & 18 warnings from the w3 validator!

Try to remember this for next time Felix :D

Also, can you PM me your website so I can take a look at it? Just in case they did do some hidden optimisation which you might have missed..

I get a lot of firms ringing and emailing bothering me with SEO services - I say the same thing to all of them, you get paid for results, not up front. Not a one rings back.

Not really, SEO is a complex chain of a large number of different ways to optimise your site so that it is ranked highly by search engines.

META tags are a very basic and obvious starting point - but content/site design is crucial.

doesnt google rank you by how many other sites link to your site anyway?

Not entirely. It's one of the many factors. But it's not just about the number of inbound links, the quality of the link matters. What the anchor text is, where it's linking to, the PR of the site from and to.
