Okay so lots of replies here with solid recommendations, but I can’t help but wonder OP - what are you actually looking for?

When you say performance, do you mean you want it to be quick, or fun? Or both? Does it need to be a good daily?

Honestly, the best all round sports car you’ll get in that price bracket is a Cayman S or if you can afford one, a GTS. Unbelievable car to drive and the noise is out of this world.

But you’re not going to enjoy it if you want a fast straight line car that’s comfortable and practical. In which case I’d be inclined to go for an RS3, as the 5 cylinder engine is excellent, and makes up for the otherwise dull drive.

I remember your Monaro VXR very well, I had a huuuuuuge moment in my RS6 trying to keep up with you at a meet.

I'd recommend getting a decent test drive in a Cayman. I think they're massively underrated cars, even the 4 cylinder ones.

No matter how good the 718 feels, it sounds like a bag of broken spanners.

Sound is soooooooo important when you're looking for a fun and decent drive.

Yes i have driven many of them.
Audis never seem to do well in "drivers" group tests in mags like evo or TG. There is a reason for that, they are fun sponges.
There is more to a good car than just OMG grip acceleration.

Just sold my F80 M3 and considered a few of these, my opinions below.

Sensible Head
----------------

2017 - 2018 - Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio £38,000 - £40,000 - decided I couldn't put up with somewhat fisher price interior and crap dealers / possible unreliability
2015 - 2015 - Audi - RS6 Avant £37,000 - £40,000 - heaviest car here and in a different class, don't see the point unless you need the space / really want this car
2015 - 2015 - Audi - RS7 Sportback - £39,000 - £40,000 - as RS6
2017 - 2018 - BMW M3 Competition Pack - £37,000 - £40,000 - had one, liked it, sounds a bit pants though
2017 - 2019 - BMW M4 BiTurbo DCT - £33,000 - £40,000 - as above, prefer the looks of M3 though, although M4 cheaper for equivalent
2019 - 2020 - Ford Mustang V8 Auto - £35,000 - £40,000 - like the idea of these, lot of car for the money, but again interior a bit low rent for my tastes.
2015 - 2015 - Jaguar XFR-S - £35,000 - had 5.0 v8 XF (na not supercharged) it was great for the money I paid, but this is severely dated compared to some other choices. would consider if budget was £20k.
2017 - 2020 - Kia Stinger GT S - £28,000 - £35,000 - dont know, never considered
2016 - 2018 - Mercedes-Benz C63 BiTurbo - £33,000 - £40,000 - what I have now purchased, nice interior (apart from stick on screen) imo, great engine sound, gearbox rubbish compared to M3 DCT, not as focused as M3 - but that was one reason for my change, a little bit more comfort
2019 - 2020 - Volvo S60 T8 Polestar - £38,000 - £40,000 - not driven it, but reviews tend to say fast but not fun.

Have at it.
