ok here is what i'm thinking

iphone4 unlocked £500, would've been the best phone apart from signal problems.

n8 unlocked £495, old style OS but probably got more polished features. great camera and OLED screen. only prob is lack of future support for the OS/apps, battery lasts 3days

htc desire hd unlocked £470, even more beefier than the n8 except the camera. downside is the screen, uses old style LCD due to htc funds cant compete with samsung! battery last only 1 day!

omnia 7, i like the amoled screen and the smooth os. but looks like the hardware is last years tech.

so which phone would you get? and why

iPhone 4 - apps, OS, screen.

DHD is also good however not a fan of the size nor do I hold much interest in all this rooting and custom roms and what not.

Signal problems have been blown out of proportion.

All those phones are good for different reasons:
  • If you dont want the Windows Phone 7 for any reason then go for the iphone 4, it has the best hardware by a long way it looks good and is easy to use .
  • The N8 is old and I woud never consider one over an Apple, Android or a Windows phone 7 device, but if battery matters most to you then obviously it is going to be the phone for you
  • The desire HD is great and hardware wise I think it is better than the Omnia, but if hardware is the reason your buying it then again the iphone 4 is your phone of choice.
  • If you want a windows phone and dont want the Mozart or HD7 then this is the only real choice left for you at the moment.

Here are some better reasons for each phone:
  • If you want customisation (like to tinker and change the appearence and want some really nifty features like the swipe keyboard (which rocks) then an Android phone is what you want
  • If you want integration with your desktop/laptop (providing you own a non mac laptop) and you want to integrate with all your work documents then get an Windows Phone
  • If you want the best hardware on the market and don't really care about what the software does then get the iphone 4. It really is the best physical device by a long way.
  • If battery life matters to you and your not really interested in anything except checking the odd webpage and making calls then the N8 is the one for you.

I personally am getting the HTC Mozart because I dont like having to pay for everything I want my phone to do, like the Windows 7 interface and integration and think the phone is far superior to the Omnia 7. I currently have an iphone 3G!

I seriously considered the iphone 4 because it is the best phone on the market and will retain more value over a longer than the other phones. If you really are in doubt then get the iphone 4, you wont regret it!

Personally if I where you, I would wait for a couple of weeks (I am) if you can, as the nexus 2 will be coming out (either Samsung or Motorola will be making it) with gingerbread OS, apparently it will make all android mobiles to date look like toys :p. The hardware is suppose to be absolutely amazing, will be far better than the HD and iphone 4 etc. pretty much far better than anything on the market at the minute (that's if the rumours are true)

But if you can't wait, then desire HD, even though battery life is crap, you will struggle to get barely a full day with moderate to high usage and also the video recording doesn't look very good at all IMO. Main reason for the HD is cause it is an android mobile, you have the choice of what you want to do with your mobile i.e. customize it to whatever you like, put loads of custom ROMs on which improve the mobile quite a bit in terms of speed etc. however even out of the box, it is a great mobile in terms of speed, features etc.

Personally I don't like the iphone at all or the OS, plus I wouldn't want a mobile where the signal keeps cutting out, when you hold it. Plus you are very limited by what you can do compared to android, however the hardware is amazing.

Comes down to personal preference in the end really. But with your budget, I would seriously wait 1-2 weeks to hear some news about the nexus 2.

EDIT:

Plus with the nexus 2, you will get android updates as soon as they are out, and you will be guaranteed to get them as well.
