Hi all,
First the system specs...
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4
i7 2600K
8GB Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8
Gainward GTX 580
H50 Water cooler
JetArt Nano Diamond thermal paste
OCZ Vertex
Now the story so far...
I used to have an MSI P67A-GD65 but the BIOS kept crashing... and eventually the motherboard died. It would power on, turn itself off and reboot. So that will hopefully be refunded by OCUK (btw, when I send it back, do I include all the disks/cables etc. that came with it? OC returns policy seems that I should but online sources suggest I shouldn't) and I got this new one.
Temps on the old system were 29 degrees on idle, and I didn't stress test properly but I never saw it go above 45. The new system has 31 degrees on idle and absolute max I have seen it go is 53 (when running 8 threads of stress test on Prime95). Any reason for this increase in idle temps? I am worried that I didn't put on enough thermal paste, as really this stuff should be performing better than stock thermal paste (which is what I had).
Anyway now that the bios is working, I decided to try and boost the clock up to 4.5GHz. It booted up windows fine, and got me a ~8 second 1M SuperPI calculation, but the moment I ran Prime95 it locked up. I restarted and increased vcore a bit and decreased the multiplier, and the system started rebooting itself JUST LIKE MY OLD MOTHERBOARD!! I was absolutely ******* PETRIFIED. Thankfully a CMOS clear was all it took to get it back to normal but PHEW I thought I'd have to get ANOTHER one for a second.
So now I am in the position where I don't want to touch ANYTHING without clear approval from someone who knows what they're doing. I hoped to get decent clock speeds with a water cooler... but ATM I don't trust myself. So I need you guys' help
