Right my renewal has come through from the AA, they want £877 to insure me, and thats without my ban declared. Renewal is due on 1st of september, but my ban doesnt end for another week. Rather than pay the extra the ban will add, im going to use the rest of my months buss pass that i've already got.

Now, quick scout on moneysupermarket nets me a premium of £750, so i'm already £125 better off, and thats with my ban declared. The £750 insurance is on my picasso, with 6 points, a 1 month ban, me being 24 and having 3 years NCB.

The £750 is with quick fit insurance, not sure how comfortable i am with that. Anybody use them ?

secondly, loads of other insurers already have their premiums listed in this list, how much am i ultimately going to save by ringing round and making myself a pain all day ?

surely you have to declare a ban no matter who you go with?

you do

but ive just not declared it on my existing policy. I'm only going to be allowed to drive for the last week of it

and rather than fork out an extra £50 or whatever they will charge me, i'll just take the bus for a week (i've already got a months bus pass) and then declare it to my new insurer

only reason i mentionned it is because ive got an offer of £750 with it declared, as opposed to my renewal premium with is £877, and thats without the ban !

The AA will never be the cheapest, if I can comment on one insurance company with any authority it would be them. They will discount it by 10% for you on that policy without much grief but tbh if quickfit have come in that low then you'll be able to find cheaper again. I was quoted 680+ this year using confused with the policy being through quick fit, little work later and Quinn came down to £580. Is £100 worth a few hours of your time ? I'd say so and it's exactly half what I paid the year before.

they were cheapest last time round. But then again that was my first quote

this time its my renewal, and thats not been nearly as competitive

anybody got any advice on how to handle the haggling approach ? so far ive mentioned im looking to beat or at least match quickfits £750 quote and firmly told no they cant do it.

Do you openly outright tell them to beat x quote or what ?

Have you tried Admiral. Cheapest by far when I was looking at renewals.

Same here. Even knocked a further £20 when i said my current insurance came with free breakdown cover.

I also found confused.com generated better quotes for me than moneysupermarket.

You might also be able to shave a few quid off through quidco with some insurers.

renewals are always more expensive.

Yes just do a quote, they come back with x price. You say I've got a quote for X price can you beat it.

With renewals always phone up and see if they can beat your best quote.

Always ring up from a renewal quote, the insurance companies sure like to take the pee...I received my renewal last week, £1875!!!!!

Got a quote using exactly the same info off their website for £1050, I then rang up, gave them that quote and after some haggling it was put down to £987, so in 10mins I saved nearly a grand.

So get on that phone and start giving the operator hell (or be nice if you want :p )

Renewal quotes are a joke. Tesco want £550 when I just did a new quote with Swiftcover which came to £365.

I've always done well with direct line, the renewal quote for my S3 was pretty good (approx £500) with all the options and everything fully declared.
