Swear to God this will be my last thread here for a while, over the week I feel like i've started about 10.

Anyway just started playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R SoC with Oblivion Lost 2.2 and after about an hour my card started to produce a burning electrical smell. So far these are the things i've done:

1) Uninstall the drivers, restart then download the NVidia driver folder. Re-download fresh ones and install again.

2) Re-steated the card, made sure now wires or foreign objects were in the way.

3) Ran a different game, CS:S which seems to be working fine.

Now my power supply has only one 6 pin plug so i'm using a 2x4 pin to 6 pin adapter. However the adapter i've got seems to be missing one pin, if you look at the adapter if it's facing you, the top row middle pin is missing and there isn't a wire there.

Is that what's causing it i.e it's not getting enough power or do I need to ring the Wales depot again for a new card. My PSU is 800 watt so I don't think that's the issue.

Thanks.

No offence but the first thing I would have done was check the temperature of the card, not download and reinstall drivers.

Use a program such as evga precision or msi afterburner, it will tell you the temperatures your card is running at, it could just be the smell of it overheating. For example, when I set the fans too low on my enermax psu I also get a faint burning smell, I keep them at mid and it is fine and still quiet.

Well I though of doing that at 1st, then S.T.A.L.K.E.R started to get really weird artifacts like the walls would be a mirror and I could see myslef playing.

I'll download MSI Afterburner now and give it a shot.

Do you know the acceptable range of temperatures for this card? And does the missing pin in the 6 pin adapter thing still O.K?

Thanks.

I have no idea at all, on the side it says Clouris or something like that then 800W. How do I check the AMP thing?

Sounds like a Colours-IT 800w, id get a decent psu anyway !

This.

My 8500GT has gone over 110c before and I never got this smell, however that faint burning smell I've had from many a PC that I've opened and found a cheapo PSU and a mid/high end card... and it's in to be fixed for a reason ;)

Decent PSU with lower wattage > cheap PSU with higher wattage.

There's usually a sticker on the side of the unit, or it might say in the manual or on the box.

Wattage isn't the be all and end all when it comes to power supplies.

It's hard to say what it is with any certainty but given by what you've said I'd be more inclined to point the finger at PSU.

I've downloaded the MSI Afterburner and the numbers are worrying me.

Just had about an hour on COD 4, 1680 x 1550 maxed out and it's at 80c which seems ridiculously high. I've not touched any settings in the MSI thing, i've just downloaded it to check temperatures.

As far as I'm aware GPUs can take a lot more heat than CPUs. As I said, my 8500GT has gone over 110c and no damage for it... except maybe me panicking a tad :p

|Oh that's good to know then lol. So is my card/PSU O.K then? COD 4 / CS:S seem to work fine although i've only tested those two, it's just STALKER that's giving me problems. The reason i'm worried is i've never had these problems with my old cards, only this new one.

Have you tried some stress testers? Can't remember the one for graphics maybe someone else will fill in for me, but that'll fully load your GPU then you can see if you get the smell, if you do only games that fully load cause the issue, and not specifically S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Well mine idles at 40oC and tops out at 70oC. I'd say below 90oC is safe but not really ideal.

Sounds about right to me, however my mate has an older ATI card that hit 125c before he put a different cooler on it - still seems ok :s

If you power cable is not right you should certainly get that sorted, could be dangerous.

This is really starting to get on me **** now. COD 4 and CS:S work fine, I boot up STALKER and the ****ing thing goes crazy.

Why is it only doing it on this card? Is it because it's new? I'll get a new 6 pin cable when I go into town tomorrow. I was really chuffed when they sent me this card this morning, now it seems a bag of ****.

My money is on it being a dodgy psu. That would explain the burning smell and why it only happens with games that load the card more.

The psu on my nas started to produce an electrical smell before it finally blew. There was melted caps and other parts on inspection afterwards. Terrible smell.

If i were you, id isolate each part, psu first and give it a good sniff and find which part it is. It may be close to failure.
