well ive done my first build and wanna get overclocking i have already got my i5 at 3.3ghz and my gigabyte 460 at 790mhz help needed as i havent a clue what to do but i can learn :)

Hey, I take it you have been using in windows overclocking tools? (Sorry I don't know the Gigabyte app name). Have you ventured into the bios at all?

I dunno if people agree with me, as I am new to I5's as well, but mostly BLCK is like your oldschool FSB this will increase the speed from the memory to the CPU and also increase the CPU speed. Increase the BLCK but watch your voltages, maybe stick the cpu volt in as 1.3 so it doesn't move.

Get to your overclocking speed eg 3.6 and then run intel burn test or prim95 to make sure it is stable. Do this for 2 hours min and if stable increase BLCK or reduce volts but only one at a time and repeat.

Yes it is time consuming but gives you something to do.

First up you have a really good motherboard for overclocking and your CPU should reach 3.8 or 4 GHz no problem. I was lucky to get my 530 to 4GHz on the stock Intel cooler. So there is no reason for you not to achieve the overclock you want.

The application that allows you to overclock your system via OS is called Eashytune6 and can be downloaded from your motherboard product page.

if you get stuck just give a shout out here on the forum and someone will certainly give you all the assistance you need. The folk here are really outstanding.

i have easy tune 6 but when i run it nothing happens is it working/loading?i also have smart 6? but ive gone to bios and overclocked to 3.8 gunna stress test with what prime95?

Easytune6 is happening you just have to go to your hidden icons and select show. It is there.

right still stress testing but does anyone know any software that allows me to change the speed of my fans (5)?

No not bad - but not ideal either. The thing to remember is that in the real world you will never work your CPU that hard. So your CPU will never run at those temps. That being the case it is not an issue.

I am assuming you are now at 4GHz?

no sticking at this for now but my temps are pretty high at 60c? stress test was a pass so 3.8 for now seeing as im new to this wait a couple of days till i get everything installed and ready then 4ghz?

60c is fine. The official intel specifications rate the maximum temperature at 72c..... but even that is very conservative, and you'd have to go a good chunk over that to cause damage.

Is that overall CPU temp or the actual core temps though? It's 100 absolute-safety-shutdown-max for the coretemps. I hit mid 80s during IBT at 4GHz with my volt-hungry i5. That's with a H50 in a warmish room with case sides all on. Scone - IBT is generally considered a good quick testing stress tool while you are still changing setting. 20 runs of IBT at max stress can show up instability quickly and is also hotter than Prime. People tend to run Prime for hours/overnight as a final stability check when the settings have pretty much been chosen.

What are your settings by the way?

For your information, here's mine...

bclk 200
cpu multi 20
mem multi x8
qpi ratio x32
pci clock 100
ram 9 9 9 24 (XMP disabled, mem setup manual with performance enhance 'turbo')

vcore 1.375 in BIOS (CPUZ shows 1.36 at idle and 1.392 load with LLC on level 2)
qpi vtt 1.3
pch 1.1
cpu pll 1.9
ram 1.66

cpu and pci clock drive both 900mv

turbo boost, EIST, C states etc all off

Actually I think my vcore is one notch down now - when I got a decent PSU I found I could lower it just a notch and still be stable, maybe cos the PSU is cleaner than my old one.

think i got lucky but just put 1.35v and put the blck to 182 (cpu multi on x22) on my i5 760

ran 10 loops of linX and temps didnt go over 68c

trying to get past 4ghz now but no idea what to tweak :-(
