Hi guys and gals wot a nightmare...

Bought overclockers bundle Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5300 @ 3.20GHz / Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G Intel P43 Motherboard / Kingston HyperX 4GB 8500C5 DDR2 Bundle ..

Built powers on fine everything works fans etc i have an old harddive connected and a CD drive both show in BIOS with hard drive as master and CD as slave

When i tell the BIOS to boot CD first and try to boot it says its booting from disk on next screen but then changes to a different screen which looks like it is the OS from my hard drive saying something along th elines of '' you computer restared unexpectedly... then asks if you want to start it in safe mode etc

I disabled the 2nd and 3rd boot priority as a test so that the only option is to boot from Cd but it still seems to want to use the hard drive.

OS is XP pro SP3

I managed to Press F8 on to get into a screen where you can choose not to restart when error reported and also to show the error report when i did thi sand tried to boot it came back with a msg saying that i needed to wipe my Hard Drive of viruses and also try a chkdsk /f

What u think , should i jus get myself a blank new hard drive?

That seems to be only option ps my hard drive works fine in another pc so does os disk and i have tried 2 cd drives and im using IDE

Any advice would be apreciated

If both the hdd and cd are IDE drives, check the jumpers and also try a new IDE cable. Make sure that if the two are on the same cable, they are in the correct order on the cable.

^ this.

If Sata, try using different sata sockets and in a different order.

Also, it may seem like a stupid question but you are hitting "any key" when it asks because otherwise it will just boot from the HDD which i guess, has your previous install.

Cheers for the quick replys ppl

Havnt tried a different IDE cable - i shall tonight. I was under the impression that because both drives show in BIOS it would be working?

I believe they are in right order because if i change them around it doesnt pick up the hard drive , is this normal?

if the hard drives are IDE make sure the jumpers are both set to Cable Select (CS) then it doesnt matter which way round they are on the ribbon

and yes sometime it doesnt ask you to press any button, I have had it do this to me as well, just boots into the CD/DVD regardless. quite hit and miss though

Looks like il be just buying a new HDD may as well

Update....

Right hi again , i have bought new harddrive and tested .

This has resolved the issue of constantly reebooting but now it wiill not boot the CD in the CD drive.

This is a copied boot cd of Windows Xp sp3 this should work right ?

HAs any one else had issues with CDR boot disks?

When you say copied how do you mean?

The CD has to be created as a boot CD, it's not as straight forward as copting two disks, The CD must contain a boot sector else it won't boot. Why can't you use a OEM/Retail disk?
