Evening all,

I'm speccing a full pc for a friend, to be used for web, general use, but also be capable of light gaming. So needs to include monitor, peripherals etc, though he already has a copy of windows 7 so no need for that.

I was thinking of this, though from reading it appears that bulldozer is a bit rubbish(?)....

already a bit overbudget - any ideas for bringing the cost down slightly without crippling performance too much?

Btw, wtf has happened to the cost of hard-drives?

not seen the huge thread in the news/new deals section? if you can live with it for a couple of months can go for 160gb/250gb to save some money, or better stiill if you have an old sata drive you can use.

you could change the cpu to an i2100 and mb to gigabyte z68ap-d3 which cost the same as the fx4100+mb combo, in the future just pop in a k series cpu and you'll be able to overclock it.

yes, bulldozer is a lot rubbish, go with sandybridge instead

in fact, heres a nice little money saver ive been recommending to lots of people because its unaffected by the HDD price increase:

ive managed to get everything you want along with a slightly worse graphics card and smaller monitor for under £550, which is a lot closer to the original £500 budget than what you had originally:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Home Server GT Intel Core i3 2100 3.10GHz DDR3 - Server £349.99
1 x No Operating System £0.00
1 x System 12 Months Standard Warranty £0.00
1 x No Hard Drive Upgrade £0.00
1 x Dell ST2220M 21.5" Widescreen LED Monitor - Black £104.98
1 x OcUK GeForce 9800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card - OEM £44.99

quite well for gaming and general usage, the extra cores only show their benefit when you get to using program that make use of them.

with my suggestion of the z68 board you can pop in a unlocked k series CPU(be it a sandybridge i2500k/i2600k/i2700k or an ivybridge 3xxxk) and be able to overclock it, with the h61 mb in the system that reaper suggested you can't overclock so would be wanting the non-k versions).
