300 angry Russians are trying to stomp the OcUK folding at home team, and with your help we might be able to hold them off. So, if your not already running folding or boinc, please read on.
Some of you may never have heard of folding at home, and some of you have but think its rather boring. I’m hoping to change that if you’ll give me just a moment of your time.

-What is it?

It’s a highly competitive sport where those with the most CPU power win. You can see who’s winning by taking a look at the team users list here. And you can see how Team OcUK and those pesky Russians are doing here. (were in 48th place btw)

-Ok, what is it really?
Its fun. No really. Orly? Ya Rly.
Folding@home is a scientific study using idle cpu time on thousands of pc's to investigate proteins when they misfold, one of the causes of many diseases.

-Why is it fun?
Every WU (Work Unit) is worth a number of points, more points = better. The person with the most points is the best in the team and the team with the most points is the best in the world.
You can compete within the team and see how your pc(s) compare to everyone elses, and when your about to overtake someone, you can post in the Weeky Team News and announce that they have in fact been pwned.

-Ok, I’ve got a few minutes, how can I help?
You can click here and follow the Quick and Easy guide to folding at home.

-Ok, I’ve got ages and I’m rather bored, how can I help?
You can read the complete Folding@Home setup guide here.

-I’ve followed the guide and my Pc is now folding. What next?
You can use the OcUK team stats page to watch yourself stomp past the slackers, and you can use the EOC stats team page to watch Team OcUK stomp past the slackers with your help.
You can post in the Weekly Team News, or in the DC forum, and you can eagerly await next weeks Team News to see if your name gets mentioned.
And you can rest assured that your expensive CPU will never be sitting idle again, but will always be doing something useful even when your not.

Bring on the Mustard, Kill it with fire, Nuke them from orbit etc etc and may the folding continue!
Lets see if we can hold off the Russians long enough to stomp Team Linux.

Thanks for reading, I’ll go and hide in my corner in the dc forum now…

On a day like today? U crazy man, even when it was cooler my pc got so hot with this running, and SLOW! and my PC isn't exactly bottom of the range, as much as i'd like to help it isn't worth it.
It is worth it and anyone with cooling problems can post in the overclocking & cooling forum and i'll do what i can.
Colder weather is coming soon so you will have no excuse.
You can set it up to only use a small percentage of cpu time like 20% so it won't overheat, and you can set it to use only a small amount of memory to keep the pc fast. Anything is better than nothing! ;)

Mine doesn't run hot or slow.

Some people prefer the competative side, some prefer the science behind it, both are worthy causes.
As Billy said its the stats that keep you interested but its the science that matters and i'd rather have my cpu helping to find a cure for cancer than sitting idle.
I bet most people on here know of someone who has had cancer, and in my mind its worth folding just for that, just for the posibility that it may help.

Ugh I think my room is hot enough without the CPU pumping away on 100% :p
Then set it to 50% :p

How many machines can I have running with the same user id?
You can have as many as you like with the same user name,
the machine id is for each processor/core in each machine, set them all to 1 unless your running two instances on a dual core/cpu machine. Hope that answers your question.

And remember the stats only update every 3 hours, and sometimes it takes two updates to see your workunit.

Also remember you can use fahmon to see what unit your working on, how many points its worth etc.

*head... exploding*

i'll just let it run :o
Its easy... the stats site doesn't know you exist until you send it something, and and it also updates every 3 hours so if you submitted a unit now it wouldn't show up until 9. And sometimes it takes two updates, in which case it won't show up untill 12.

I'll be stomping Plasmoid next update :p
I remember when he stomped me... payback time!

When you reboot it will disappear. Thats all perfectly fine. Thanks for joining. :)

If you want to know what its doing, how many points its working on etc download fahmon.

Edit: Yes closing the window will stop it. Best to reboot if you want to get rid of the window.

Cheers for the response, you have time for another. Should I run it twice for a dual core system?
I would (in fact i am!). Run two copies of it in two separate folders and make the machine id of one 1 and the other 2.

Great to see lots of people joining still. :)

Lots of you don't seem to be aware of fahmon. It will tell you what units your cruching, how many points there worth etc and its easier than looking in the text file. A handy little program if your interested in the points side of things.

I believe the ps3 will have linux as a feature, it may even come pre-installed, and the cell is going to end up in servers so perhaps they would make a core for it...
Microsoft make a loss on each xbox, if we could somehow get folding on that it would be fantastic from a price per ppd perspective. Its the same architecture as old macs isn't it, and theres a core for that.
