Help - Wife and mother in law believe in power of the mind to heal themselves and others

where are your in laws from?

As mentioned above, just make sure your child has access to a proper doctor, make sure they get their jabs etc.

How did you manage to get married without finding out your wife was mental?

They are from Sydney. The mother in law is a midwife - my Wife is a radiographer.
I dont think she had thought much about this healing power until the mother in law arrived.
I think what bothers me the most is they even believe in remote healing. I asked through what mechanism? What method of transport? They just said they knew I wouldn't understand.

This. Don't be one of those ridiculous families who believe in magic or think that prayer will heal everything, resulting in their sick child dying from what would have been easily cured by visiting a doctor.

Why does it bother you though? Can you disprove it?

What a silly thing to ask.
All he has to do is slash his arm and let her do her Reiki and see if it heals itself.
Or he could break his leg and they could Reiki that and, but this is just a guess, I don't think Reiki will work.

I look at 100s of Radiography images every week and I'd love to see his Radiography wife put some of those breaks back together with her healing hands.

We have just had our first child and the in-laws have been staying with us for a few weeks to help out and then to travel around the UK using us as a base.

Anyway it came up last night that both my wife & her mum believe that they can heal themselves and anyone else through something they called "Reiki".

I was flabbergasted. Apparently while my wife was in labour they even had a relative (another woman) back home doing this for her from 8000 miles away.

What should I do?
Show them a few Randi/Dawkins vids on the hope of highlighting how it does not work.

My GF used to believe in this new age spiritual rubbish, I simply asked a few questions - highlighting the various flaws in it & she eventually realised that it simply did not work.

Whoever taught them most likely took advantage of them "financially & emotionally" to brainwash them with this kind of junk.

It's worth noting that it's not cheap either - a clear incentive to lie about it (the teachers).

Its stupid, my best friends mum now has 6 months to live because she believes in this stuff and would not go and see a Dr when there was time to do something.

Do you think your wife really believes in this nonsense or is just humouring her mum?

Can't imagine not knowing someone's position on make believe magic by the time you marry them or have kids (having said that I was with my wife 10 years before we got married and 13 before we had kids).

Actually, its scientifically proven that the power of the mind can heal any self repairable / healable condition faster, as reduced stress significantly increases recovery time. The power of the mind alone can also vastly reduce and minimize pain.

Though none if that is an excuse not to see a doctor when needed, nor to think that you can self heal anything that your body normally cant.

It's obviously all a load of rubbish. However, if you were focusing the healing on yourself, it could work! The placebo effect is rather strong...

Its not just a placebo effect, both reduced stress and lower adrenaline in the blood increase the speed of recovery as stress may reduce the effectiveness of the immune system.
