Over there...
Looking at buying a plasma, 5.1 cinema set (with DVD) and plumbing it all into my Sky+.

How do i wire it all together to get sound out of the 5.1 speakers permanantly, and getting 5.1 from Sky+ (optical out)

I was thinking getting a home cinema DVD set with optical in, and plugging the Sky+ optical out into there and plugging the scart of the sky+ into the plasma. I would also plug the DVD player of the 5.1 kit into the TV via component or HDMI.

Would this work? Would the sound of Sky+ work in time with the picture if the sound was being routed through the 5.1?

What would i do with the sound from the plasma? Just turn it to zero?

Basically you have it spot on. You would turn the plasma down to zero or mute. Sometimes pressing mute leaves the mute symbol on-screen though which could get annoying.

Not all broadcasts are in DD5.1. Infact, only some of the movie channels are. The rest is all Stereo/Pro-Logic.

If you ensure that the surround sound kit you buy has Pro Logic, more than likeley Pro Logic II then you will have no problem upmixing the Stereo to give surround sound, it works rather well too!

thank you very much!

Is really that little broadcast in 5.1? As that is making the decision a lot more complicated...

If not much is broadcast in 5.1 on Sky, then i could much more easily get another 5.1 setup that does exactly what i need, and only has red/white in - would solve a fair few issues. Obviously if theres a lot of broadcasts in 5.1 then that would be worth the trouble...

On Sky+, then virtually the only 5.1 stuff is Sky movies, and Box Office, however most of the movies are in DD5.1, and so if your a movies subscriber well worth it imho.

In theory, many of the sky channels have enough bandwidth to support DD, but never bothered to include it :(. Seems that Sky HD will add 5.1 to more channels, but at the cost of needing the set top box replacing, and an yet another tenner/month :(

Anyway, I would strongly recommend buying a 5.1 system that supports an optical in. You may only get the movie channels on sky+, but eventually you may want SkyHD, in which case many more channels will eventually open up with 5.1 surround in the future.

I've never noticed the sound being out of sync with the pictures on my Panasonic plasma, my AV processor does allow a delay to compensate for plasma delay, but I guess the processor in the panasonic is fast, as lipsync is just fine even at delay set at 0.
