Help with DJ Setup?

And the dead is done people !

I just got hold of a very nice setup imo.

2 x Technics SL 1210s Mk2 DJ Turntables
Custom flight cases.
1 x Gemini PS 626 Mixer
Stanton 500 carts and Technics slip mats

All for a lovely 450inc P+P :D

Btw i might give you a bell later krooton about some of those tunes.

Gonna be hardcore spending on some Vinyls tonight, lol im well buzzing cant wait >< !

ive been thinking about getting some super cheapo cheap vinyl decks after my CDJs (which im well on the way to being able to afford :D)

could i realistically get 2 direct drive decks secondhand for £100 or so? i'd like to avoid belt drive if possible but i might not have a choice :(

Why get 2?

Most people that are CDJ'd up use only 1 turntable :)

I antagonised for a long time whether to go down the CJ or vinyl route when I was starting out - in the end I opted for CDJ800s (£600 for the pair off ebay, a good deal). I feel they're a nice compromise between the advantages of digital and the feel of vinyl, although I know that many die hard vinyl junkies will disagree.

Been looking around on the bay at some Technics.

The price isnt too bad at all in comparison with new gear, and if they are as good as you guys are selling them to me and from the reviews i have read i may go for them.

TECHNICS 1210 MK 2 - They ok?

Ill decide on a mixer soon, may try and find a package or 2 seperate decks, not sure.

Ta for the help anyway everyone ! :D

1210 mk2's are have pretty much been the industry standard for the last 15-20 years and they are excellent decks, and well built, strong - they last forever if treated properly.

I recently sold a pair on ebay and got £450 for them, they were well used but as shiny as new - i've always respected my audio equipment and it doesn't leave the house (btw they were 8 years old)

Try to get a pair for around £400 - don't get refurbs (shows they've been around a bit, and probably won't work as well) but make sure they haven't been abused - if the paint is chipped or worn they're probably really old. Also the platter MUST get up to full speed in a quarter of a turn, and stop the same to a COMPLETE stop. If not, the quartz mechanism may be buggered and it will hinder your mixing as it might not stay on point.

Also, have a look at the Vestax PCV 275 on the bay - they were £400 new but sell for around £150 s/hand. Excellent mixer especially for d'n'b - 3 channels - 2 mic inputs - send/return for external effects unit - 3 band kill switches (so you can completely kill the bass from one tune, or all the treble or mid - makes for good mixes without sound clashes on 'dodgy' tunes) - may be a bit too good for a beginner but they're cheapish and the crossfaders last forever (I scratch every time I mix and never had a problem with that mixer, others start to bleed the sound in from the other side).

Tunes:

where do I start? get some Ram Records albums usually 3-5 vinyls each - good stuff similar to Andy C's style, and not many fillers

Anything on Hospital Records is good rolling d'n'b - "high contrast" especially good - did a gold digger remix in the summer that was awesome

your best bet is online shops - juno records, blackmarket (now bmsoho) have a good online store too. hardtofind are rubbish

scratch records (if you fancy a go) - dj rectangle

anyways good luck with sourcing all the stuff, and happy mixing!

Ye got the decks about 5 days ago, and i jsut cant get off them :p

Got myself a nice set of tunes aswell, atm i have .....

DnB:-
Ram Trilogy - 2 LP
Ram Trilogy - 3 LP
Pendulum - Hold Your Colour LP
Pendulum - Voyager
High Contrast - Days go By (awesome track btw)
DJ Zinc - Drop Beats Not Bombs LP
Fuguees vs DJ Zinc - Ready or Not
Sub Focus - Aeroplane/Flamengo
Andy C Feat Shimon - Body Rockin
A few other random DnB songs which were in a set, went cheap so thought why not - have some good tracks on though, just cant name them.

Ferry Corsten - Punk (Orig+Classic)
Mauro Picotto - Lizard
Mauro Picotto - Iguana

Cant think of the rest ^^

Getting used to beat matching ok, althoug finding it harder to get the same bass sound from both, one always tends to get slightly deeper even with a tweak on bass and high settings. Ive learnt how to clear most backing noise and get vocals to come out pretty clear though (handy when trying to get Ready or Not mix in with other things). Also started using the actual deck speed settings to help mixing of songs and getting funky vocal noises from.

All together im slowly getting there :D .... Just need to practice practice and practice.

Oh also, does anyone have

Bad Company - Shot Down on Safari LP ?!

I seriously cannot buy it anywhere, no where has it in stock.

Also does anyone know where this tune might be buyable, after a LOT of googling i cant seem to find where exactly it is from and it it can be bought on vinyl.

LTJ Bukem - Atlantis (I Need You)

:D:D:D

If you want to move to digital later (eg, avoid the cost of buying vinyl all the time), then Finalscratch is a good way to do it without having to spend the money on CDJs.

Seconding the guy who swears by A&H mixers, our Xone 464 takes a ton of abuse and still works perfectly.

have you got really frustrated at any point when beatmatching etc has gone wrong and said to yourself "why did i spend all this money on these"? i can imagine its what im gonna be doing an awful lot :p

If i was you, i would go for 1210mk2s they are dirt cheap off a certain auction site. Along with a mixer which will suit your needs. Im getting into turntablism where you scratch ect. I had a new Vestax PDX 2000 MK2 pro and a pro x fade for my mixer as that fader is basically the best on the market. If i was you i would go down the cd route if your mixing. As you will find it cheaper to get cds and also the extra features of CD Decks are very biased to mix djs :).

Just realised you got them :). Should record us a mix as i was into dnb a lot last year :).

Over time you will find it easier to beatmatch especially with better decks. Practice as much as you can get used to recording mixes and playing records at diffrent pitches as they may sound better :). Also try using the upfaders and EQs a lot :).

Na lol im not at all, every time i play them i get better and better.

I am slowly understanding and grasping new ideas, had a few mates over for an hour on New Years Eve and played them a load of stuff which was really fun, didnt mess up too badly either considering im pretty damn new :)

Also 35 quid for Atlantis :O, jebus. Although if i did find the tune on sale, the temptation would be high for me to buy it :p

Yup, love the tune

Just spent a lot of time categorising all my vinyl which I'm getting rid of, took me what seemed like ages
