Help with my diet please

What is your diet actually like?

kd

I eat loads of fruit & veg.
Every day I'm having Potatoes, cauliflower, sprouts, carrots, meat, eggs, bacon, couple slices of brown bread, apples, bananas, plums, tomatoes, peas, strawberries and other such stuff.
I'm not a big drinker because with diabetes I wee a lot but I do know I should drink more liquid.

I'm surprised you're not regular with that diet. I'd assumed you couldn't have been eating much veg, but you clearly are eating a good variety. I guess your only option is to go for the "non-food" type things like the husks etc.

Hmm ok... Probably best to see a doctor/dietician about it then.

You shouldn't be weeing any more than normal. I'll not offer any more advice as we ain't allowed but I think maybe you could do with talking to some other diabetics. Can be really helpful to find out what helps others. My favourite forum for diabetes is http://diabetes-support.org.uk/diabetesforum/index.php

I immediately thought you'd be short of fibre on some kind of fad carbohydrate-free diet, but it looks like you've got a decent mix of food in there. Assuming you're not eating a plate of meat with a few courtesy vegetables on the side for effect, I think you ought to see the quack to be on the safe side. But something nice and high in fibre for brekkie like porridge won't go amiss and is nice and slow release for your sugar levels :)

About 4 months ago I went to see the GP because I'm fed up of getting up 5 times in the night so I was sent for tests.
Everything was 'normal' and she said that she couldn't help because it was a normal condition of diabetes.

Why didn't you just do this in the first place?

Maybe because I have a lot of respect for the OCUK Forums and there are a lot of people on here who are very knowledgeable.
I have picked through the wheat & chaff of this thread and already made my decision but will ask the professionals tomorrow when I'm back at work.

Suggests that your blood glucose is too high too often to me. The renal threshold is around 11 mmol/l after that it creeps into urine and starts the weeing. Like I said this isn't the right place to be chatting about this. Don't want your thread being locked for medical advice.

Increase natural fat intake, butter, coconut oil, animal fats, olive oil. Eat them with all of your meals.

Natural fats massively aid digestion of food, if you are having problems passing then it's because you aren't digesting/breaking down food effectively enough during the digestive process.

Contrary to a lot of advice given here and probably elsewhere with regards to alleviating poor/slow digestion and constipation, increasing fibre/roughage won't necessarily help and may infact make things worse (you are already eating a lot of fibre) high fibre foods are virtually impossible for us to breakdown/digest (especially in their raw state, vegetables cooked until soft are much easier to digest). Fibre (especially raw/undercooked) has a scouring affect on the intestines which can irritate and damage the delicate lining of the intestinal tract.

On the face of it what you are eating everyday seems ok, but it obviously isn't balanced right for you. So imo, you should, reduce/eliminate raw/undercooked fibre and increase natural fats, make sure vegetables are well cooked (until soft and just beginning to change colour) and meat isn't over cooked, rare to medium rare meat is much easier to digest than well done/overcooked meat. Also look into betaine/hydrochloric acid supplements which can help to improve poor digestion in the short term.

The wife will pretty soon be starting as a Slimming World consultant in her spare time, and has offered the following:

1. Drink plenty of water. This can't be overstated. Obviously don't overdo it and up with brain swell or some ****. It'll help, though. Not the brain swell. The water... oh, you know what I mean!

2. If you decide to go with Prune Juice, 100ml is 3 Syns but fresh Prunes can be used as a B choice on a green day. Similarly, other things such as the husks etc. being recommended WILL have Syn values attributed, so if you want to stay on plan, just make sure you factor that in.

:)

Slimming World is the dogs and I can't believe how much you can eat.
It works for me anyway.
