Help with new build - Keeps hard freezing

Hello everyone,

I recently built myself a new computer. I feel I have a fair bit of knowledge but I am stumped at the moment.

When playing games, for example, assassins creed 4, or watching films with Media Player Classic, on occasions the display will freeze, the speakers will buzz for around 4 seconds and then stop. The computer screen stays frozen.
It is sporadic in happening though. Some days I get 2 or 3 freezes, some others none.
The specs are:

Windows 7 64 Bit
MSI 990FXA-GD65 Motherboard
AMD FX8350 with Hyper 212 evo cooler
Corsair Vengence 1600MHz 8GB RAM
Geforce 760GTX 2GB
WD blue 1TB HDD
600W Corsair Builder Edition PSU

I only have two thoughts myself but I think they are not the cause:

1 - I set the bios to use the XMP profile for my RAM, as it wouldnt stick at 1600MHz otherwise, but I believe I should be able to let my RAM do this.
2 - I initially had an OCZ 750W PSU when I built it, but it died after 3 days of use so it got returned. This put me off OCZ a bit which is why I got the Corsair - I am pretty sure it is powered enough as I did the research before I bought it as a replacement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I just want to enjoy my new computer without having to restart it randomly!

Cheers

Jake

Try it with one stick of the RAM at a time, then run MemTest86. Use barebones (i.e motherboard, CPU, RAM and power supply, using integrated graphics)

Right cheers for the replies firstly, it is greatly appreciated.

I thought I would run Memtest firstly without removing any first - currently on the second run, first one passed. No errors as of yet.

The setting for the RAM is meant to be 1.5v, which it is at, so I dont know why I would increase it?

The only other thought I had, the RAM installed is in slot 2 and 4 of the motherboard, due to the size of both Corsair RAM and the Hyper 212 cooler in there. Could this be the issue because I did see somewhere before that not all slots would allow you to run at 1600, only slots 1 and 3 (think this was for an Asus motherboard).

I will leave Memtest running and see what happens - seems to be going well so far - how long should I leave it going before accepting the RAM is not the culprit, and where else would be good to look?

Running on barebones would be hard as there is no on board graphics with the M/B I have. Does it really matter?

I wouldn't bypass doing what Shivy suggested. Also run one stick at a time (and in different slots), and use your computer normally, play the games and use Media Player Classic.

Okay well I shall run a long test overnight on one of the sticks, and the other the next night.

In the meantime I tried using just one stick to play Assassins Creed 4 - again, crashed much quicker than with two sticks so was sure it was the culprit. Switched over to the other one, and it crashed again.

Im contemplating restoring the bios factory settings and formatting windows as well.

Could it potentially be a power issue? Because the problem seems to happen when using both RAMs separately.

Checked the M/B manual and it does advise using DIMM1 all the time for reliable boot up. Gonna switch my Hyper 212 to Pull, fit an exhaust fan above on the roof of the case so I can use DIMM1 and DIMM3. Will give it a bash and pray.

Ill try the Northbridge voltage if need be - will it be checking what HWmonitor says it is and go a few above that?

Right with RAM in DIMM1 and DIMM3 its not frozen yet, done an hour on Prime95 with heavy memory testing and no faults - then played assassins creed 4 for an hour immediately after, then ran 3D Mark 11 - all no issues - Going to run Prime95 overnight and make sure of it.

Also need to get a slimline fan to put my Hyper Evo in Push/Pull rather than just Pull - cant have a normal fan in push with the height of the Corsair RAM.

Right no crashes since using DIMM1 - been playing games and ran Prime95 a few times now - all going solid.

Seems this is resolved now - would appear znyone with an MSI 990FXA-GD65 should use DIMM1.

Only got the pull fan on the Hyper 212 - got a slimline fan that will fit in push so I can have Push/Pull, but I have lost the anti vibration foam pads - bugger.

Looks like a begging email to Coolermaster!

Thanks for everyones help - wouldnt have thought RAM at all.
