I have admitted defeat! So ocuk to the rescue!

My PK590 arrived this morning and its already sending me nuts! I can't get the sound to come out of my surround sound system.

Im crap at explaining so forgive me....

Right, i have the surround sound system and Sky+ plugged into the back of the TV with AV cables and my PS3 by HDMI.

So the surround sound system is plugged into AV1 and the Sky+ is plugged into AV2 and PS3 is in HDMI1.

How do i get this TV to put the sound through to the surround sound system on all AV and HDMI channels?

This was the exact same setup with my old samsung tv and it worked perfectly, but this new tv is not having any of it...

Thanks

Edit: Also tried plugging in my surround sound system by HDMI and still no go...

You should ideally be connecting the relevant devices to the home theatre system, not the TV.

Its a Philips HD dvd player 5.1 surround sound system, it only has 1 HDMI and 1 AV. Im even more clueless than i thought with all this.

Sending me round twist reading everything, trying to find a way to sort this. Actually glad im off to work in not long as my patients are wearing thin with all the malarky.

This Simplink i keep reading about is a load of tosh aswell, can't get that to work either....

Like i said, would only have to plug it into my samsung and everything worked fine with no messing about with settings. This new tv on other hand was designed to annoy me.

Best get putting all me toys back in my pram.....

Do i just need a more up to date cinema system? My Philips one is going on 4 years old now, is it not good enough for this tv? Or is it LG's way of saying i have to buy one of there's?

Will just end up me being a divv and missing something...

On the DVD system thing - is the AV an HDMI input?

Ideally you need a proper AV receiver. These have many HDMI inputs, one output. You'd plug your Sky and PS3 into the receiver, then one single HDMI output would go to your TV.

If your DVD thingy only has one AV input you're kinda stuck unless you buy a HDMI switcher. If it doesn't work as an input then you'll need to buy a receiver.

Hope that helps :)

Sky+ will be scart surely, so wouldnt be able to be connected to the sound system.

My setup I suppose is similar I have the Sony DAV-DZ260, so all video goes directly to the TV and all sound using optical cables goes to a switch and then into the input on the sound system. I could just connect an optical cable from the TV to the sound system but would then lose 5.1 ability as the TV doesnt do it.

Thanks guys for replying.

I have tried all combinations possible with no luck. Seems this tv just doesn't like putting sound out to the cinema system.

Sky+ has 2 av's
Cinema system has 1 hdmi and 1 av
Ps3 hdmi

Got the ps3 in hdmi 1 socket
Sky+ in av 1 socket
Cinema system in av2 socket

Tried connecting the sky to the cinema system then cinema system to tv and just get sound and no picture. Tried connecting through hdmi from the system to the tv and that's no use either.... all just completely pants.

Can't get my head around why this worked perfectly with no messing about on my old Samsung but not on my new lg.

Old Samsung only had 1 hdmi so ps3 was plugged into that, and the sky+ and the cinema system was plugged in by av cables. And the surrounding sound worked brilliantly with everything.

Hmmmmm..... got a mate coming up to look at it later see if he can do anything with it.

It probably worked before as scart can act as an input and output in some cases. Is one of the tv's scart sockets an output to a VCR or similar? Is there a way you can set this up as it might require tinkering with the setting in the menu. This way the tv should be able to act as the routing device as if you were taping a programme from your sky with a video recorder.

I'm sure there will be a way to set it up somehow!

Well Managed to get my hands on a Sony STR-DG910 Receiver. Haven't got the slightest clue on how to set it up or use it. Bloody big ugly thing aswell and the manual may as well be in Japanese.

Going to have a better look at it tomorrow. If i still can not sort it, the old tv will be going back up for a bit till i can sort funds to blow on a new compatible surround sound system.

LG TVs have a menu setting to enable the Optical Output on the back of the telly. It's on page 10 of your manual. The section in the manual is called "DIGITAL AUDIO OUT SETUP"

The surround sound system doesn't have optical input or output unfortunately. That's if I'm right in thinking thats the wire with the red laser thing? Though it does have hdmi, so would have thought it should still work?

Does the surround system and tv support return audio over HDMI?

you need to get an audio out signal from the tv to the surround system and then tell the tv to output all audio via this rather than internal speakers.

Shadowman, I think Ryb89 said his Philips all-in-one kit is 4yrs old, so that's well before HDMI 1.4 with audio return.

Rybo89...
i) you've swapped telly makes so there's bound to be some differences in features and set-up

ii) you haven't given a model number of the Philips home cinema kit, so the best anyone can do here is give some vague suggestions. You're gonna have to do better than that if you want some help I think

iii) if you had a connection from the old telly, then I presume that the same connection on the Philips can be used for the new TV... but you haven't said what that connection is (on the Philips kit, just to be clear). Why?

That's useful info to help those who are trying to help you, don't you think??

iv) chances are that the Philips HDMI socket is an output only. It'll probably say "TV" somewhere around the socket hole. Very few 4yr old home cinema kits had HDMI inputs.

If the Philips does have an input then it's most likely to be via the SCART which is bi-directional... but you have to plug it in to the correct socket on the TV and then possibly do some setting adjustments

v) if you go through with the plan to use the Sony AV amp you'll need some proper speakers for it - the Philips ones won't do because they're very low Ohms - and you'll blow up the amp if you wind up the wick too far.

You might as well also get yourself a Blu-ray player (or use the PS3). Chances are the player in the Philips kit won't give your Dolby Digital or DTS audio from DVDs, so as a standalone player it's not going to be that useful.

Do you want to have another go at coming back with a bit more specific info...

  • Are you sticking with the Sony amp or going back to the *Philips?
  • What cables do you have spare?
  • *What's the Philips model number?
  • *Which of your TVs SCART sockets has the audio out feature?

I think ill leave the sony amp. If i can't use it, the girlfriend certainly can't use it. Plus its just way to big and fugly.

I have loads of AV and HDMI cables, 1 optical digital cable and sure i could fish some kind of other cables from my wire saving drawer.

Already answered in previous post on the model number

Thank you lucid

Right guys i think i have sussed it!

Now getting sound from sky+ through the sound system. Now for the PS3 which is most important for sound, im thinking about buying a 'Optical TOS SPDIF to Digital Coaxial Audio Converter'.

That is the right way around isn't it for the converter? PS3 'optical out' to the sound systems 'coaxial in'.

That should 100% deffo work shouldn't it?
