This is a what would you do situation...

My mum came down to visit over the weekend - the first time in four months. We headed out of my flat and were walking down my road on our way to the Clifton Suspension Bridge/park for a general wander.

There was this TINY old lady with a walking stick outside her front door on the same street as me. My mum is 4ft 10" and even she had to bend down to talk to her properly. She asked if we'd be kind enough to take her to the bank.

Now the bank (depending which one she wanted) is only 2-3 minutes walk away, but with this old lady it would've probably taken an hour. We made up an excuse about being on our way to an appointment and carried on.

I felt bad, but not bad enough to go back and waste an hour of time with my mum.

So what would you do?

  1. Not help her
  2. Help her and relish in your day's good deed
  3. Help her in the hope of receiving a reward
  4. Help her and steal a reward

Edit: Maybe we could get a poll? I've never had a poll before! :D

can remember been almost late to one of my gcse due to helping some old guy out

depends, if I were on my way somewhere, not help her, if I were on my way somewhere but it wasn't urgent, help her out not expecting anything, and if I was just out and about, I'd help her out, not expect anything and make sure she was alright, talk to her etc, be sure she has family checking on her over winter and such.

Old neighbour a few years back died and it was 4 days before he was found, simply because no one saw him on his usual routine, was very sad :(

How does she normally get to the bank?

How was she asking you to help, did she just want a lift?

That, pretty much. It's pretty damning that people would consider otherwise tbh. I'd help her every time unless I had somewhere time critical to be (hospital etc). Luckily there's still a sense of community for some of us. :p

I would have helped her. Theres nothing important enough that you cannot spend a little time helping the elderly. Someday you will be one;)

I'd have told her where it is, then asked her if she was alright getting there.

Give her a piggy back :p

Piggy back would have certainly been quicker! :)

Hmmm decisions...bit like an rpg this... I'd probably opt for number 1 but if it would really take as long as the OP is suggesting then that would make a difference. I'd do as above, tell her where it is.

Normally if I'm out then I'm going somewhere - lectures or meeting people so don't have much time to spare so I'd probabaly not stop. When I have had spare time though I've walked people to a train station more than once, and shown people where to get busses etc.

You seriously made your excuses and left her? That's pretty horrible imho. I hope when you need some help from someone they do exactly the same to you.

:(

She was a millionaire, it was a test. You failed and therefore arent in her will.

I would have helped unless i was in a rush.

What help did she need?

I'd have given her a lift if I was in the car for sure, but if all she wanted was company on her walk sorry - I'm not that bothered.

How else could you help if you had no car - carry her?
