I doubt thats what he's saying.
Either way everyone else isn't a walkover, most people who find themselves in that situation do something about it. They find another job, usually better paid. Unfortunately industries with large union presences don't seem to want to do that, instead they just **** it up for everyone else until they get their own way.
Basically the teachers are acting in the same way they hate children acting...

Or on a more basic level. The Kenyan farmer's work is being traded for your work as a teacher. The Kenyan needs to buy Land Rover parts, and you are educating future Land Rover engineers. That is your value to him.
Now let's say teachers got together and demanding to be paid twice as much as they should be paid according to the above relationship. The "extra" has to come from borrowed debt money, which is supposed to be paid back one day (with something like let's say, Land Rover parts).
What needs to happen is half of the teachers need to be cut and go work in the Land Rover factory. Otherwise one day... no more food.

Hence why some workers and professions deemed it necessary to organise themselves into collectives known as unions, so that they don't have to choose between unemployment or a pay cut.

I doubt that's what he thinks he's saying, he thinks he's pointing out to everyone what a martyr to the cause he is and how we're in so much **** everyone has to suffer along with him. Well that argument might hold a bit of weight if we didn't see FTSE100 directors' pay increase by 50% last year.
No they're behaving in exactly the way a company would behave if their customers weren't honouring the terms of a contract - withdraw service. Why are the only legitimate choices unemployment, pay cut, or move jobs? What's wrong with standing your ground and expecting your contract to be honoured?

Something that you dont seem to understand is that companies can run at a loss and at the point of that loss getting too large, then cutting costs can be the only choice left to them. Joining up to a union in that isntance doesnt make a jot of difference.
The Honda case I cited earlier, the Unite union advised workers to actually take the pay cut. I know your head in the clouds attitude doesnt want to compute that in the real world things like pay cut or lose jobs are the only options left to a company. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8063719.stm

It's amazing what happens when management actually engage with the workers and work together for a common cause isn't it? Even with nasty Unite involved. However it would be foolish to pretend that this case is remotely comparable with what is going on with the assault on the public sector.
Ever seen the videos of those Romanian orphanages in the 1990s? Read up on what happened when Ceausescu's debt supply dried up.
That's an extreme example but it can and has happened.

So given that you admit it's an extreme example and therefore not going to happen, my question still stands - who is going to teach the nation's children if PM kwerk makes 50% of the nation's teachers redundant?

Ah that's completely different then, I thought it was about a pay increase, rather than decreasing. Still, at least they have jobs compared to the thousands who would love to be in work.
I didn't say it's not going to happen. I suppose if they keep kicking the debt can down the road until it just blows up, it could happen. Imagine all benefits just suddenly cut, 50% of public sector workers laid off. People can't feed 5their kids any more, the government just warehouses them like Romania did.
Living a cushy life and getting an education is a luxury not a right. The bulk of the world still doesn't get either of those things. Our luxury has partly been subsidized by their exploitation BTW.
That luxury has to be paid for. The government can't just pull it out of thin air and give it to you as a "human right".

you should have worries about that when Labour went on the unsustainable spending splurge.
I'm all in favor of unions etc. but they never seem to understand that someone has to pay the money.

Kwerk, read this carefully: The UK is not going to run out of money any time soon UK bonds are at historic low yields, that means that investors have unprecedented levels of confidence that they'll get their money back, and will accept a very poor return as a result. The UK does not have a debt problem, it has a short term deficit problem resulting from the depression. Deficits have been tackled before, global economic crises come to an end, I see no reason why this one will be any different?
A good quality education is more than a right, it's a necessity if the UK is going to compete on the global stage in future.
More realistically?
- Cut the school week to 3 days.
- Have a 50-1 pupil/teacher ratio.
- Hand out a bunch of cheap surplus laptops and have them do online classes half the time.
- Outsource school admin to private contractors
Don't like it? Send your kid to private school.
