TL;DR

There are leaked strings, NPC textures and maps that refer to both L4D3 and HL3. Some of the data points to day/night cycle in L4D3 and new infected "Nocturnal". One NPC texture is from L4D3, another is from HL3 (according to anonymous source from september). The maps leaked do not work now, might be fixed. One of the maps was test map for HL3 (according to anon source).

I'll believe it when the game is finally announced, been too long already, and it doesn't matter if there's tid bits of information, I think everyone is aware that HL3 exists, it's when it's coming out.

Valve lack the creative talent to make HL3 good these days. Even if it comes out, it's going to be poo like the 2nd one.

I didn't think it would be news that someone at Valve was working on such projects, it always seemed pretty obvious that somebody would be.

Just that they have such a ridiculous way of working that nothing will actually be finished.

I'm currently playing through the second HL and this statement strikes me as nonsense.

You're entitled to your opinion good sir, just like me. So am I allowed to nonsense your nonsense strike? - I jest.

HL1 was emotional and memorable, with some predictable parts and wonky jumping sections.

HL2 was stale with a predictable story line and felt, again to me, more like a physics tech demo than the second HL.
(Seriously, how many times was physics the answer to a puzzle in that game - Can it be shot, no.. Is there water... Oh yeah.. stupid player.)

Maybe that's down to the amount of games that used the same type of strategies Valve did. EG:

The lift will be here in 5 mins = Defend the lift. (IIRC it's from the Ep content rather than HL2 but meh, it's for example)
We don't go to Ravenholm anymore = I'm going there then, it will also be dark and scary because they said they don't go in a sad voice)

Or even just I got older and my world view and expectations changed, but HL2 didn't move me like HL1 did. HL1 is still my standard to beat in a game. (that and System Shock 2, and I hold little hope for SS3 to even come close tbh)

Also, the creative writing behind HL1 have all left Valve IIRC leaving a bunch of people who have done thing but make hats for years and eat free buffet food.
Not a talent Id look for in creative writers personally but they might pull something out their used (tea)bag, we never know. So here's too the undying hope of fans of the series, to which I am overall.

The last proper game Valve released was... Portal 2, in 2011.

Making games is waaaaay down on their current list of things to do.

Hmm, this is interesting:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=527598

Half Life: Valve

HL expansions: Gearbox
Team Fortress: unnamed mod team bought up by Valve
CounterStrike: unnamed mod team bought up by Valve

Half Life 2: Valve

Portal: Narbacular Drop team bought up by Valve
Left 4 Dead: Turtle Rock team bought up by Valve

Portal 2: Valve

CS:GO: Hidden Path games
DOTA: unnamed mod team bought up by Valve

DOTA2: Valve

So basically Valve are the Microsoft of the game dev world. See a good idea, buy the entire team and product, release it as your own.

They've only actually had one original IP, and that was Half Life ;)

It's worth noting that Gooseman, Kim Swift, Turtle Rock, Viktor Antonov, and others (visionary director/designer genius types, it seems) all left Valve after the company took their ideas and turned them into Valve products.

The original HL was simply IMHO the best game I ever played, whilst HL2 isn't as innovative or thrilling in many respects, it'd still feature in my top 5. To rubbish it entirely is likely just an over reaction to the fact that it doesn't eclipse the first in say the way doom2 does to doom. HL2 is an outstanding game that still looks/plays very well by modern game standards.

I could be playing Elite Dangerous/Assassins Creed but I'm not, I'm finishing HL2 simply because it's more entertaining by an order of magnitude.

BTW the original elite would also feature in my top 5.

Valve are lazy money grabbing (insert expletive).

Since steam they just rake it in and don't give a flying **** about gamers.

I used to love them, but not anymore. :(

Doom 2 was, and still is, a great game. It had the right mix of everything. - I have to ask, Quake 1 > Q2 or the other way around? I'm a Q2 fan myself.

You are right that it doesn't eclipse the first and It does look and play very well by modern game standards but it also lacks heart.

HL1 had the Marines shooting the scientists, and you being dragged off. HL2 had no emotional connection to the character(s) or the game apart from the forced feelings by bringing back the ones from HL1.

I will replay thou as it's been awhile, but yes saying it's poo might be an over reaction to it as a standalone game, but it's a poor sequel.

Not going to hold my breath. Making new video games doesn't seem to be high up on Valve's list of priorities anymore, but that's not necessarily something I mind as long as they're being productive elsewhere with Steam and polishing/ releasing new content for their existing games. Part of me thinks the reason they're so hesitant to make a new Half Life game is because it won't live up to the acclaim of the previous releases.

I don't think we will ever see a HL3 tbh. They could not live up to the hype and most people will just moan. Playing back now anyways and even at the time I thought HL2 was only a good game, not the masterpiece it's made out to be.

Either way valve can just sit back and milk the steam profits. No biggie :D

Completely disagree. All you're basically accusing it of is not being the same game. I absolutely loved HL2 but on its own merits.

Its a bit like FO4. It gets compared to previous games so professional reviews give it good ratings but user ratings pan it because it can't possibly live up to the hype.

Anyway back on topic, its baloney. Heard it all before. HL3 is dead/non-existent. If there was any work done initially its long since been abandoned.

I have to agree I didn't find HL2 all that good either. The graphics where/still are very nice, but, to me, that's all it has going for it. It was out around same time as Doom 3, but I preferred that for its MP :I
