Hi End Speaker demo week !

Sounds like you are having a bit of trouble finding the right speakers like me. I had a listen to some Fact8, FB1i and Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor Ms the other day. The speakers I have liked the most so far were the Diapason Karis but I want to listen to their bigger brothers the Adamantes and the Astera.

Will probably take the pair of Cremona Auditor Ms for a home demo.

So next instalment..... dealer dropped off the Audiovector's yesterday evening, we had a play with my speakers first, I think I surprised him...:D....
Hooked the S3's up, and a little play with position and toe in etc..... and adjusting of spikes. Strange these, they are mounted on a leaf spring, are designed to flex and basically wobble!.... Goes against my beliefs....:( ...

Looks like this :-

Forgive the white colour..... there're only on loan ;)

First impression were not so cool..... they gave a more refined sound, but lost a lot of space and depth to the soundstage.... Bass on the other hand was bit more weighty but boomed less. They have downward firing port in the bottom. So they seemed better at not exciting the rooms resonant frequency.
Which I just worked out is pretty close to the port tuning or my speakers....Which might explain my they can trigger the room at times.

Playing a few tracks I still wasn't over impressed to be honest. Lost that live open sound I had.... seemed a bit flat.. So left them till tonight.

Now the kind dealer left me some link wires to experiment with, to replace the brass link plates..... Normally a good idea, though I choked a bit when he said these was 600 quids worth of links !!!......

So with some fiddling around, (not impressed with the design of the spades on these links, they are tapered for different diameters and don't push as far as I wanted) links were installed thus :-

Sat down to test them out...... first impression was wowww what changed !!!... I'd got the spikes better adjusted and done the links and now the sound was much more open, crisper, more detail, cleaner and general came together nicely. Spent the evening just flicking through albums, and they have started to give me the sound I like from mine, but with more smoothness and refinement, deeper and weighty bass.
They still need a bit of fine tuning as far as position goes as the bass isn't quite tuned to the room yet. Plus I would put some screws into the floor for the spikes to locate on, to tighten it up a bit more.
I wouldn't wire them like this myself, I would go for tri-wire set up, and not 600 quid link wires !!!....

Seems they might be sensitive to the speaker cable used, so would be another level of tuning required should I go for them...

Next step is to switch back to mine, and try out the PMC Fact 8 which should arrive tomorrow..... Looking forward to those, been my long term favourite in the dem rooms....

Hmmmm this is a tough call, the PMC's are around very nice, relaxed and smooth, easy to sit in front of. Though I think they lack the next level insight detail and clarity the S3's bring. Which really dig deep into the recording and bring out every little subtly.... Tomorrow for some vinyl and some more rocky based music.

Reworked some Van damme cables today, to give tri and bi wire without fancy links.

I'll make you some links for £100 out of £50 worth of materials :p £600 is just mental!

Looks awesome, loving the finish on the speakers in the last picture!

Yeah the best bit is they wouldn't fit on the PMC as the spade terminal was too small..... WTF !!!..... Not that they are big at all, mine are much more chunky ..... Any way I made up some new Van Damme 4mm sq tri-wire leads for the S3's and 8's.... To keep everything fair and square :).....

And the result is...., well up until the 11th hour was the Audio Vector..... But the FACT 8's made a late show, with LP12 fronting the system. Helping to pin down what each was doing, their strengths and weakness......

So the S3's + points = great leading edge detail, bass weight, top end sparkle.
Negative points = Could over power room in the bass (room fault) treble was bit directional, but mainly lacked mid range body and presence/projection. A little cold/lean in the mid/vocals.

FACT8 + points = Superb mid and upper range, vocals in room, clean smooth overall balance, natural sound. Bass under good control. Musical. Cheaper!
Negative points = Lack a little edge or bite at times, not big bass ?..(see above)

So on balance the PMC, plus a slightly crisper sounding speaker cable should have all bases covered..... So I placed a deposit, :D.. they may arrive at the end of the week, till then I have the demo pair.
Mine will be in Light Oak.

So next will test a few cable options.
In the end both are excellent speakers and would be happy with either, and it took knit picking to choose one.....

Full review and pictures will follow in the New Year once mine have been set up etc.

Can't believe it, the order went in yesterday afternoon, and they were delivered to the shop this morning !!! The dealer was as surprised I was .....

So all being well I can get into town tomorrow to collect and drop off the demo pair. :D

Dropped the AV's off today, and borrowed some TelluriumQ Black speaker cable to try out.

Do show us the pics of the final versions. I'm curious as to how the light oak looks. Have to say that I wasn't too taken with the finish on the dem versions. Just a little OTT for my liking.

Must be your eyesight going with age :D

Great stuff, looking forwards to hearing more and seeing those all important pics!

First shots of mine in place......Later will change the table colour to match !

Not spiked yet, need to be able to slide them around finding the best position.... Hence the sticky take on the floor.
Sounding pretty good straight of the box, top end will smooth and sweeten off a bit. Sounding nice crisp and tight........ Obviously I biased, ;), but they seem better than the demo pair. !!!
