A music festival expected to attract up to 25,000 revellers hit a flat note when just a few thousand turned up.

Police yesterday estimated that 3000 people attended the controversial Hi-Fi North festival held at Matfen, Northumberland. Villagers had protested against the event amid fears of drug-fuelled disorder and traffic chaos

There was also a row over who would pay for policing. However, the lack of interest saw the price of tickets tumble from £52 to as little as £7. It is believed that as few as 4000 tickets were eventually sold.

The one-day event took place on farm land near the Military Road, three miles from the centre of the picturesque village.

Bands and singers playing included Ian Brown, Editors, Maximo Park, The Subways, Dirty Pretty Things and Brakes. Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Erick Morillo, Pete Tong and the Shapeshifters made up part of the dance bill.

As well as the main music stage there were large tents dotted around the field where revellers could listen and dance to this year's biggest club hits.

There were also fairground rides, a portable rock-climbing wall, beer tents and stalls selling legal herbal highs.
