Hi i'm going to buy a whole new spec within the next two weeks, I know most of the parts I want but I need some advice on a few bits a bobs.

Currently i've decided on this spec below:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 - £206.79
BFG nForce 680 (Socket 775) - £164.49
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS SuperClocked 320MB - £199.74
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB x2 - £93.98
Scythe Infinity Heatpipe CPU Cooler - £31.71 + AS5 for supercool temps
Thermaltake VA8003BWS Armour Super Tower Black - £93.99
BFG 800W PSU - £105.74

Now here comes the questions, are those two hard drives a good choice for raiding?

Will that 800W PSU be enough even when I upgrade to Quad core and buy Nvidia's next top range Graphics card

And who knows a good DVD-RW drive, im only going to use it for installing games not really any serious DVD burning.

For the memory I was thinking about getting either Kingston hyperx 4gb of the pc6400 4-4-4-12 stuff but thats gone :( so it's either the teamgroup memory or Crucial ballistix. Which one would you guys recommend?

Thanks for any and all information.

Any brand is good, if your not burning just get a relatively cheap one. I have a SATA Samsung drive which quiet nice.

If you want 4Gig, OCZ do a good kit, if you want 2gig Crucial Ballistix is the best.

Let me just stop your there...

CPU - 6420 or 6600, 6700 is a waste unless you have money to burn
M/B - That board is awfully expensive, better option would be DS3P or P5N if you want SLI
GPU - looks OK, considered BFG?
HDD - Might consider WD's AAKS series and maybe larger storage capacities, would be very good for RAID too!
HSF - Noctua or Tuniq are much better then that Scythe cooler
PSU - Overkill, better off with a Corsair 620HX if you want headroom for the future.

Hi Mogget, welcome to the OcUK Forums.

First off can I say a few things about the parts you have decided on already.

Im sure everyone will agree with me here but the E6700 is a waste of money, for £50 cheaper you can get a E6600 will will clock to 3.5GHz with ease.

Probobly not a good idea going for such a stupidly expensive mobo unless you need 10 SATA and USB slots. Theres 2 mobos i would look at here. If you are looking to SLI in the future then there is THIS and THIS
If not then I would look at a DS3P they clock very well indeed.

With this money saved, you can now afford a GTX! http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-094-LT
On pre-order until tomorow :)

Yes those hard drives are very good in RAID :)

The case is up to you but its not really needed at that price. If you were me, I would get a PC7. ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-054-LL ) or ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-038-LL )
Only the white is in stock at the moment. Black will probobly be back soon.

800W is way more than is needed. May I recommend a Corsair 620W http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-004-CS it can handle just about everything.

As for memory, the Ballistix PC5300 clocks VERY well indeed, from personal experience I have got it above 1000MHz very easily. If you aren't planning to overclock much then theres the Giel PC6400 surly?? @ £49.99 how can you refuse it unless you are overclocking.

This is a good DVD drive: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-076-SA

Thank you Will for beating me to it :(

Save yourself some money and get the E6600 it's much better value for money.

I'd switch the PSU to the Corsair HX 620 - you'll be future proof and again save a few quid.

For memory have a look at the OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series. I've got this myself and am very happy.

The motherboard again is expensive - try the DS3P or P5N if you're looking for SLI.

I'd recommend the Noctuna cooler, again got one and couldn't be happier.

not sure where to start here so much to reply to :P

I've got £2000 to spend but im not going to buy the top end right now or else I won't have enough money to buy a really good Quad core and Nvidia's next top of the range offering.

The main reason I chose the 800W psu is to future proof for when I do get Quad core etc and because i'm going to do a little bit of overclocking with the CPU to around 3.0-3.2GHz. But if thats overkill ill probably buy something lower like you suggested

Is the noctua cooler quiet? im hoping on building a fairly quiet pc but im not really too bothered so long as I can't hear it with my headset on and that.

Might consider WD's AAKS series and maybe larger storage capacities, would be very good for RAID too!

Atm im using a 120gb seagate barracuda and i've filled about 50%, what im looking for mainly is a quiet but good performance drive. I've seen some tests of the WD's they look like really good performers maybe i'll have to try them for the first time, previously i've always stuck to maxtor or seagate.

at the moment the drive I have is really noisy or at least I think it is, do all drives make a huge whirring sound when loading a DVD or CD, I can hear mine downstairs which is bad.

How important are the timings on the memory when its being used for gaming, and is it a bad idea to get 4x1gb sticks of memory?

Get the 8800GTX, its pretty future proof for the next 2/3 years. The E6600 is worth it sooOoo much more than the E6700.

A GTX and a current Quad core only use about 400W of power, rememering the fans/opticals and hdd 620 would be enough.

Yes it is quiet. It obviously gets slightly louder as the temperatures go up and the fan speeds up but its amazing compared with the stock cooler.

The samsung drivers are very quiet but the 7200.10's are the best in RAID ( I think )

I once had a drive like that :D It exploded a CD, actually shattered it into thousands of tiny peices. That one i speced will be fine, yes all CD drives make a whirring noise when reading a disk :P
