Hi
I have a Asus p5K3 Delux mother board with a Q9450. Also fitted is a Asus silent knight 2 cooler (pc bought allready built). I have overclocked it to 3.4 Ghz. The problem I have is the high temps im getting (core Temp and Real temp software). At idle my temps are
56, 56, 54, 54, and at load with prime 95 with large ffts after about 1 minute are 72, 72, 69, 69 and creeping higher! I have never fitted a processor before but understand that thermal paste is needed. Could this be the problem? The pc is about 2 years old but I have only now overclocked it and am getting the results shown. As stated I have an asus silent knight 2 ultra cooler fitted which was fitted when i bought pc, could this be the problem? . Could somebody lead me in the right direction please as Ive never had experience with fitting processors, I have fitted new memeory, hardware etc etc in a pc before but never the processor. Help would be much appriciated,

Hi Lynd,

Welcome to the OCUK forums.

I personally think you temps are safe but not what they could be. I would check the below.

CPU Fan not blocked?

Is the CPU cooler securly fitted?

Did they fit it with a decent thermal compound and not use to much?

Try removing the heatsink, cleaning the CPU and putting on some fresh thermal compound and reseating the cooler.

Thanks for your reply. i have checked the cooler and cleaned it allready and it looks OK. Which thermal compound should I use and are there any guides to do this as I have never done it before. Thanks

Yes some good video guides on youtube and for paste. Most people recommend the Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound. They also have a MX-3 paste which is meant to be better but does cost quite a bit more.
