Right unfortunately i have a friend who thinks this :(

He wants to spend about 1k on car and insurance, i've pointed him to tricked out high mile mondeos, and he's having none of it. He wanted to get a '95 205 with 40k on the clock, because it will last longer...

I *know* this is stupid, but how should i form a sensible argument apart from the whole rep mobile stuff to convince him. I'm wondering if its even worth it i should just let him buy his shed, he's apprently gonna try and drive it to Europe, which should be... interesting to say the least. But because i'm a nice guy i want to try and convince him without sounding like a tit that he's (in some cases, this being one) probably wrong.

I'd rather have a car that had done 95k of decent runs than one that had 30k of short stop start shopping trips.

The "it's gonna last longer" thing isn't a reasonable debate at all, IMHO.

Get him to register on this forum, I'm sure we can convince him otherwise. :p

The standard to which a car has been looked after and maintained is more important in determining its lifespan than mileage.

a) I'd rather he didn't come he'd bring shame
b) He wouldn't want to come on here
c) You'd have a hard time convincing him even with proof
Thats his prolem he's stuck in his way of low is always better... *cries* he's looking at a low mileage 95 205 for £500

a friend bought a 205 for £500 with around 50,000 on the clock
but she wanted a small car and its perfect for what she wants
i've been in it numerous times, and tbh it's not really the car i'd want to drive around europe in.
my friend drives really slowly anyway, so its not really a problem
but i certainly wouldn't want to spend hours on the motorway in a 205.. any more than 70 and i'd be scared that it will rattle itself apart :p

Oh no wait, its alright, hes just phoned his dad, who conveniently agrees with him (his dad knows best!) and told him to phone the guy and arrange a meet. oh and he also mentioned that he should use the MOT to verify the mileage just in case. I asked him why he thought someone would bother clocking a '95 205 :p and the reply was "it might have rolled over", to which i asked if he thought it had done of 999k, but he said his brothers old car was back at 9k after going over 100k, which i haven't heard of personally on anything built in the last 20 years? So all sense has left this building i've basically given up... :)

Cheers guys :)

Your mate sounds like a bit of a retard (no offence :) ) I'd let him get on with it; people like this do us all a favour, those cars with 99.9k miles soon become undesirable to the masses, thus making them a lot cheaper to people like us who know there are next to no issues with merely high miles on a quality car.

No i agree, he is a lost cause, i'm just ceasing to be involved. I also agree that tbh i wouldn't want it any different, being able to buy cheap high mileage cars is great! :D I just wanted to help a friend (well actually a flatmate!) :(

tell him i'll sell him a nice low mileage octavia if he wants :) now where did i put that digital mileage correction guide :)

What 205 is it?
:p

InvG

I haven't asked any further, i did see the advert but instantly said its probably not a great idea, i *think* it was a 1.8 diesel (definately a diesel i'm just unsure on engine size) which just means this gets better and better

Tbh the car would be alright for a first car, but it won't be his first he just has driven in a year or two cause of uni costs...

what is it with this forum and mondeos? you guys love em, is there anyone under 25 reccomending them?

i had my 1st mondeo when i was 19 lol dunno how old fox was?? i'm on my 2nd mondeo now and fancy going even bigger next time (5 series in mind)
mondeos are great value for money, nothing beats them, i think mine is dull and boring until i drive it, always puts a smile on my face. truely epic cars tbh.

£500 for a car with tax and mot as long as it ain't going to fall apart in a few months ain't too bad a deal tbf.

I wouldnt quite call it epic, but ive also got a Mondeo (im 23 if that has an relevance) which I bought as a 2nd car while the pug was off the road, I had planned to get rid of it as soon as the pug was sorted but im likely to keep the mondeo for quite awhile, unless it starts to get unreliable. *touch wood* So far its been very reliable, bought it about 6months ago with 112k on the clock, now got 121k. Considering I paid just over £1k for a car with MOT/Tax, working air con, half leather seats and everything else the ST24 comes with its hard to beat value for money wise.
