High pitched whine on stock cooler?

Hi all, I have just built myself a new system, comprising of a Asrock 939Dual (with AM2CPU board), 3800+ X2 AMD CPU and a STOCK COOLER.

Now, I know that stock coolers are not the quietest of things, but this stock cooler makes a terrible high pitched whining sound... if it were just noisy i'd understand but this high pitched sound is doing my head in. Do you think the stock cooler is faulty?

The AM2CPU board extension means that the CPU is facing towards the sky, when I presume they're built to be at a 90 degree's angle - but i cannot see how this would cause the high pitched sound.

Any ideas people? Should I contact OCuk or AMD?

if the fan is turning at the rated speed then you have no position to rma i believe.. i had the same problem with a p4 stock hs before and its t odo with *** posiitoning of the fan over hte fins, that whining is the air movement..

you could try to jiggle the fan abit

I had the same problem with my stock Intel 775 cooler. HORRIBLE high pitched whining when it started spinning fast.

I ended up getting a Scythe Ninja Plus (120mm fan). Now the fan speed doesn't annoyingly change & the CPU sits idle at a nice 34-36 degrees celcius... does go lower depending on how warm the room is. The temp got to 28 degrees celcius idle once :D

Pretty good for a prescott :)

But as said above, try moving it around and make sure there is nothing in the way of the fan that could be causing it to make a horrible noise.
