High risk cars / Young drivers - Insurers to go for?

Yeah, 'tis really. I seemed to have got a bit lucky with Admiral - doing a quote now, they want £380 more for the Xsara than they did early last month

Makes me a bit worried I cocked something up and made myself 91 instead of 19 :p

In fact, the quote is soo good, I'm getting tempted by the darkside. Especially since there's a real nice standard Rev.3 Turbo for £4,500 just 20 minutes away

Ah well, sorry to hijack the thread a bit there, but I think the point has been made already. It's Admiral group for reasonable quotes, or if they won't touch you prepare to get stung to the tune of £5,000 from a quote-everyone insurer such as the AA, Adrian Flux or a specialist :(

Ensleigh were my first insurers and they do aim to insure first time drivers, you might find they have a local part-time branch at your uni. I remember the girl at our uni branch was really fit too :)

Don't waste your time if you have a high risk car. I went in the branch and the woman was unable to give me a quote of less than £2500 for my Mondeo. She was under the impression that they specialise in Students, and students dont drive cars 'with huge engines'

'err its a 2.0'

'like i said'

I insure my car with Flux and rate them quite highly, having covered my mods without fuss and for relatively minor increases. What is the reason for the high level of disatisfaction with them?

I'd say it's most similar to HGF and Rover cars. They can be bad on occasion, with dissatisfaction widely reported. Everyone picks up on it and sorta rides on the band wagon :)

I had exactly the same experience as you fox, the woman accused the omega of having a massive engine. I pointed out that its hardly a high performance car but they wouldnt touch it.

Absolutely useless for anything decent.

Seconded. No-one could come close to endsleigh when i was 18 and 19, driving the 1.6 Peugeot. But they can't even come under £1000 for the Jag, when Norwich Union will do £350.

I've found NU to be good for Insurance group 16/17/18, but they tend to run scared at groups 19 and 20.

I've found flux to be quite reasonable. I'm 19 with 0ncb driving a 2.2vtec UK Prelude. I'm paying £1250 with flux but admiral and elephant wanted £1900 for only a 10 month policy.

Flux originally quoted me 1600 but I lied and told them admiral would do it for 1300 so they nudged under at 1250.
Admiral however wouldn't budge.

my first car (only 1.3) was under Endsleigh and no body could touch them. But they won't insure decent performance cars cheaply.

I use Tesco for my Focus ST

Sorry to go off-topic but don't buy the Chrysler Crossfire, it isnt that good. It's a soft and spongy cheap thing built on the old SLK platform.

Either go for an old SLK if you want a posey car, or consider something like an MX5, RX8, Audi TT, 330Ci, that sort of thing, all are considerably better than the Crossfire in absolutely every way.

Infact the only thing the Crossfire does well is 'be cheap' - because nobody wants them.

The thing about the crossfire is i think they look better than all the cars you've listed, and it would certainly be newer / less mileage.

The audi TT is definately a womens car so thats out of the question as is the MX5 for the same reason. The Ci is something i'm also considering along with the RX8, but it seems you get more bang for your buck with the crossfire? Also having a very hard time insuring those two too.

I have read a few things about the interior not being up to scratch, when i sit in one ill make a decision (provided i can get insured for under 2.5k!).

Norwich union wont quote me on my 2.0L 307 XSI. They say i am not old enough to drive that car 20 with 2 years no claims..

Does anyone know why?

Because NU blow goats in hell. They'll let me insure a GTO for 1100 with uprated filter and a BOV, but a turbo timer is wholly unacceptable and means they won't actually quote on the car!

You are the first person I've ever heard who will say it looks better - our friend Mr Clarkson, whose opinion most people disagree with but is funny anyway, said the Coupe has the appearance of a dog doing its business ;)

The Audi TT is no more a womans car than the Crossfire is. There is a reason why you get so much for your money with the Crossfire - nobody wants them because, compared to the competition, they suck.

BMW 330Ci is leagues ahead, as is the Audi TT despite its looks, RX8, Alfa GT, infact virtually any Coupe you care to mention.

This sort of money buys a lot of very tasty metal. Or it buys a Crossfire. Your call :)

I read somewhere that Chrysler invited all motoring journalists to Las Vegas to debut the Crossfire and Clarkson wanted to bring his whole family but Chrysler wouldnt pay up, hence the slating Clarkson gave the Crossfire and the 300C.

Who knows if its true or not.

And on another note, the Admiral group dont want to know about insuring me until im 21 unfortunately. Cheapest (if you can call it that) quote i've had so far is 6k.

No, probably not, as he really liked the 300C and he's not that petty.

I was with CIS... they wanted over £2,200 for a Rover 214!!! That was with 2 years NCB and with the car parked on a driveway.

It was more expensive than my first year of driving. The car was parked on the road and I had pass plus.

I thought, 'screw that' and got a quote with NUD. £775 :)

I then tried Elephant for my 220, £1260 with both parents on the policy, car parked on the driveway and 2 years NCB.

Sadly though, because I'm paying monthly, they put an extra £300 onto the policy :(

Off topic - but my god at last I've found a good reason to be old!

I've been getting loads of quotes recently whilst car shopping and as its a long time since I last shopped around I was shocked at how cheap insurance is for me now. The merc I ended up getting is £310 a year fully comp, group 12, but I also got a quote for a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo (group 19) and that was only 505 :D

32 years young with NCB dating back to 1991 lol.

I cant believe some of you are having to pay over a grand a year for insurance - thats shocking.
