Hello

So, due to my old radeon 4870x2 having issues with power, I bought the HIS IceQ 7950. All worked fine until my PC started to reboot itself while gaming, but worked fine otherwise. Went to the local 'expert' to test the PSU he said it was faulty, got back home and the PC wouldnt even boot up. There used to be lights flashing twice and then the common 'beep' while the gpu fan was on at full speed to go back to normal speed and display graphics on the screen. Now the lights flash sometimes once, sometimes twice, theres no beep and the screen wont turn on even though everything seems to be running. Tried to switch cables around, put the gpu in a different slot, no luck. So I thought the PSU died completely. Ordered a new PSU, today I installed it and still the same...however when I changed the GPU to the old one it booted up... is it possible that CLEAR CMOS cleared my latest BIOS update? and somehow the Motherboard doesnt recognize the new GPU anymore?

Thank you very much for any help

What are your full specs including PSU make and model.

The Clear CMOS will not change anything in terms of changing BIOS rev, it will default the system.

CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550@ 2.8
COOLING: Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme
MOBO: Asus Maximus II Formula
GPU: HIS IceQ 7950 (used to be asus 4870x2)
AUDIO: SupremeFX X-Fi 8-CH Audio
HDD: WD 320aaks 320gb
PSU: XFX 650W XXX Edition (used to be Enermax Infinity 720W)
RAM: 4gb Corsair Dominator-8500

Didnt really see how the guy was testing the PSU, I did hear a lot of beeps while doing it, what is the correct way to test a PSU not taking it out of the PC? maybe he unplugged something to test, turned the PC on and then the Beeps occured because not enough power and the GPU messed up ?

I connected the speaker and it beeps once on the old gpu and doesn't beep at all with the new one on...

ok it might not beep because the internal speaker might be unplugged, but still old GPU boots up, the new one doesnt..

Wondering if the GPU is faulty, can you test this in another system?

I assume the pc specialist should have used a PSU tester which should have measured voltages.

Unfortunately I cannot test it anywhere else. After connecting the speaker the old gpu makes 1 usual beep, and works fine, this one doesnt make any beeps.

Well I guess he did if he said the PSU was faulty, wondering though if there was a way he could damage it

Well I got it from OcUk on the 7th September, so perhaps I should send it back?

He should have not damaged the PSU whilst testing unless he did something daft, but as you had issues your original GPU this could have been the start of issues.

Ideally the 7950 needs to be tested in another system so you will need to return to Ocuk for them to test.

How is your 4870x2 running with the new PSU.

You mean the GPU?

I had power issues with my old GPU probably due to overheating as one of the LEDs at the back of it is constantly on ''D5 (R323) GPU-1 (Master) No power'' even with the new PSU.

The new GPU worked fine-ish with the old PSU as i still kept having reboots (due to the faulty PSU I guess) while playing diablo 3 or battlefield 3, (fifa13 worked fine which I found strange). As it got worse I went to get it checked and been told the PSU is faulty, so went home, couldnt turn it on with the issue described in 1st post, thought the PSU died completely so ordered a new one, but didnt help.

The 4870x2 boots and works. wont play any games as im just scared it will reboot etc...

Yes, re-read what you wrote, thought you meant damaging the PSU

I am wondering if the 4870x2 is on its way out (mine only lasted 3 months) and the 7950 is just faulty.

Without knowing what test he done on the PSU its hard to say it actually faulty or not.

oops sorry for confusing you

well mine lasted about 3 years, still works... but remember having it around 90+ degress and got to the point where it just kept rebooting the pc at some more power consuming games i.e. risen.

unfortunately I wasnt able to go inside his little room to see what he's doing, all I could see from where I was, was that I think he unplugged some of the cables and then switched the pc ON to check the voltages...something was beeping, not sure if the PC due to cables not connected or it was his voltmeter? in the end he said the PSU is faulty and his reader was beeping most of the time....

ok sorry for a triple post....

went to the service and told them what happened, unfortunately as they're not a big company they didn't even have a machine to check my GPU which means I will have to send it back to OcUK..

so as the webnotes are having issues how else can I request an RMA?

thank you very much

/E this is madness....after leaving the gpu in the box in my car for a few hours, I got back home, thought I would give it a go and plug it in, and what happens?! IT WORKS :O No idea how and why, it looks like it just wanted a day off.....
