Hitch hiking to Morocco

Me and my mate hitch-hiked roughly the same distance in Australia over the course of three months (took it slowly) and amounted over 60 individual lifts.

We never had any trouble (though there were a few times we thought we might be in trouble) and met a lot of very friendly people.

I'll probably come back to this thread and offer more input when its not silly O-clock but for now I'll leave you with two snippets:

1) Avoid large towns and cities.. and even large villages. The more isolated you are, the more likely you are to get a lift (seems counter-intuitive but 100% true - for example, it took us 2 days to get out of townsville.. whereas on roads with one car/hour, we were pretty much guaranteed a lift). Also, people from smaller communities tend to be a lot warmer. You can visit the cities at a different time. This trip will be about getting to know the countries you're travelling through. Consider taking a light tent.

2) I can promise you right now that this will be the best thing you've ever done, no matter what little bits of trouble you might run into :)

Oh, just seen your company. hitching in a group of three will be pretty difficult, especially if you all have luggage. Due to the fact that two of them are girls, I'd expect a lot of people will offer to just take them.

good luck!

I actually remember some article a while back that mentioned some people trying to travel the world for free by relying on the generosity of others..they got as far as France :D

I took a 65L Eurohike one - but, that was the same backpack I used for 5 months in Asia, so I dare say you could get away with a fair bit less :p You probably wont get any chance to wash clothes mind, so something big enough for clothes to get you to Morocco at least. Or, if not, just stuff the side pockets with deodorant so drivers aren't repulsed when they roll the window down next to you :p

Usual advice with backpacks I guess, go to a camping shop and try a few on, see what feels comfortable on your back with a decent weight in, as you may end up wandering about wearing it for a while. Could always get a slightly bigger one than you think you'll need, don't have to completely fill it, and then you'll have a large one for any future trips :)

Aye thanks, looks like it'll be a trip down to Blacks or somewhere similar when I get back to uni :)

My mates did this - with 3 of them and baggage they had issues (your going to be limited to people with space), they had to split up to make progress.

Yeah I'm aware 3 of us is quite a lot to fit in most vehicles, but we're prepared for it to take longer - here's hoping we'll be lucky eh?

Thanks so much for the responses guys, incredibly useful stuff so far :D

I remember another where the bloke got to where ever he was going and the generosity of the people was heart warming to say the least.

Yeah, the generosity of others can be stunning at times. We were offered money, food, shelter, and one family treated us as their own for a few days at one point. It was like we'd known them our entire lives and were told to come an go from the house as we liked (Epic house, too). Doing something like this will restore your faith in humanity. I'm not religious but there were times when we were in need that what can only be described as "guardian angels" helped us out.
