I could show you a pic that's been 10% Gaussian blurred in PS, resize it to 800x533 and it still looks sharp - you have to be a pixel peeper to judge. I think it's safe to assume the 17-40 will produce sharp images unless you get a bad one. I think the attraction of L's is not only the sharpness but the colour and contrast rendering - quite warm, overly so in some circumstances (imo of course).

Im quite interested in the 17-40L, I need something short on my 1dmkII, ive got the 10-22 for my 20D and love it, I cannot decide between the 16-35L F2.8 and the 17-40L F4, Im currently more interested in the 16-35 but I havent seen any direct comparisons of the two.
