I got a load of the sand coloured version last year to do a bit of repointing when they were being sold for £2.80 a tube.
It was a bit too grey coloured, and quite thick to use, but dried solid and has held up well (so far at least).

Would occasionally get the smell of weed in one of our front bedrooms, discovered it was coming from next door through a hole exactly like you described. Expanding foam did the trick. Messy yes, but who's gonna see?

OP: What has been posted above is pretty much what any professional and Youtube builder would do.
If you wish to dress it up more than what is needed, may I suggest a viewing window be installed and have viewing by appointment on every third Sunday of the month

Knock knock?
I mortared a full brick in. Dunno if it's got any structural strength or that the mortar got into all the gaps properly but it was the best I could do in a tight space.
