One of my mates is looking for a new PC which he'll mainly use for general day to day usage.. Web browsing, some gaming (nothing too taxing) and some home office work. He's got a budget of about £550.

So far he's come up with this -

MB-101-AS
Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS)
£51.99 £51.99

CP-134-AM
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM)
£91.99 £91.99

GX-044-HT
HIS ATI Radeon X800 GTO ICEQII TURBO 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (RX800GTO-256ICEQT) (GX-044-HT)
£99.99 £99.99

MY-030-CR
Crucial 1GB DDR PC3200 CAS3 (CT12864Z40B) (MY-030-CR)
£64.99 £64.99

CA-021-AK
Akasa AK-ZEN-01-WH Zen White Case - No PSU (CA-021-AK)
£27.95 £27.95

HD-093-SE
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB ST3160811AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-093-SE)
£34.95 £34.95

CA-025-EN
Enermax Liberty 500W ELT500AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CA-025-EN)
£61.99 £61.99

CD-037-PO
Pioneer DVR-111D 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter - (Beige) OEM (CD-037-PO)
£20.95 £20.95

Subtotal £454.80 VAT £79.59 Total £534.39

While I can't see any glaring omissions or wrong choices I can't help but think the Conroe route may be the better option at the moment but he's open to Intel or AMD.

Can anyone come up with a good spec for under £550?

cheers for the reply, This is going to be my first self build as well. Sadly may have to put it on hold for about a month or so. I have had an expensive month with car stuff and other bits and peices i needed for work :(

Pointless getting a spec for a month down the line, prices and deals change all the time, whats good now might not be then.

Just keep an eye on the 'spec me' threads over the next month, should give you a good idea.. ;)
