Okay, so I finally got round to making one of these. Well, more accurately my mate paid for it and I assisted with the building of it.
The combustion chamber is about 500mm of ~3" ABS pipe, with a 3" > 2" adapter and a 1000mm barrel. I don't know the exact measurements because it was just kinda thrown together.
The ignition is the flash from a disposable camera. It's a bit weird becuase it has 3 contacts, but when they're placed about 1mm apart and the capacitor is discharched there's a healthy spark - about 2000V IIRC. Plenty to ignite the fuel.
The fuel is a butane/propane mixture from a blowtorch gas canister.
The projectiles are tennis balls for now - they fit perfectly into the tube.
It fires about 150m or so if the gas mixture is just right, and the trajectory is good. The recoil is absolutely immense - shoulder mounting is pretty dangerous.
Went to a Kodak shop and blagged loads of disposable cameras, the flash is the ignition! The rest came from a plumbers merchant. (Student loan you see!)
