Is the engine underpowered to carry such a lump of a car?

Need the space but not at the cost of performance.

Was also looking at a 2.2 Mazda CX-5, seems much more refined.

Th Civic has a turbo, this makes it more equal than you think.

Depending on which Mazda you mean mind. I'm only aware of 2.0 or 2.5 petrol cx5.

The 2.5 out of the 3 would be best performing.

The 2.2 Mazda's appear to be diesels which makes it an odd comparison. Probably best to compare to the Honda diesel then. The Dtec has an excellent reputation for reliability.
