Hong Kong Confirms Human Bird Flu Case

Remember how much the last pandemic "helped" the economy, yup, it does seem like the economy needs another boost, time for another fake pandemic scare.

Its first case in seven years, where, there were more cases and it turned into nothing at all, much like all the other pandemics of not very contagious, hard to spread diseases we've seen.

Not very contagious, not a proble, contagious but not even close to deadly, not a problem, chance of random virus becoming the next spanish flu, trillions to one.

When you read about a virus thats both contagious and deadly, be worried, till then, ignore it.

As a virus, H5N1 is a lot deadlier than the H1N1/A swine flu bug that triggered the flu pandemic of 2009-10

Tell that to the millions that died in the 1918 outbreak of H1N1.

H5N1 has a very unreliable mortality rate as a significant number of infected only have very mild symptoms and do not report their sickness thus giving a false high mortality rate for H5N1. Around half of those with serious symptomatic onset die, which is cause for some concern regardless.

H5N1 has killed 309 people globally since it was first recognised in 2003.

I expect Hong Kong, who have a history of Avian Flu will start culling poultry if there is more than one case.

Well, I ain't going to worry mostly because I think there is little point. Even if it causes a real problem is there anything I can do about it? I read masks aren't really effective unless you use a new one at least daily. I wash my hands regularly, which seems to be about the only thing I can personally do that would have any effect.

Anyone know what mass slaughter does to a gene pool of a species if allowed a promoted recovery or whatever?

Weaker/stronger/no different?

I haz flu. :(

Is there reliable evidence for this now? I found some discussion on it but I'm not sure there's proof.

Still, all the strains so far seem to have low transmissability between humans so until there's a new strain that breaches this barrier there doesn't seem to be much to worry about.

Isn't it just one woman who came back from holiday from the mainland?

Health Secretary York Chow said late Wednesday that a 59-year-old woman had tested positive for H5N1 bird flu after returning to Hong Kong from the Chinese mainland

In which case, would not worry, Hong Kong is MUCH cleaner then mainland and people here have far higher standards of cleanleness (if thats a word). In a month I stayed in mainland, could count the number of who washed their hands in public toilets on my fingers... probably on one hand. Saying that, there is practically ALWAYS soap in public bathrooms in mainland, so not like they have any excuse...
