Honours system at uni

How do you get honours with your degree ive heard varying reports. Some claim its from doing well in your dissertation others claim its for reaching over a certain grade.

Its never been explained to me but i cant see myself loosing my honour that would be horrendous!

I think its just if you don't fail your final year (Warwick uni anyway)

speaking of failure, I failed 2 exams today

final year of physics degree... no chance of 2:1 now

Up here all degrees are 'honours', unless you only just scrape through (ie you get below a 2:2) in which case they call it an 'ordinary' degree. I think it depends a lot on the uni.

The Scottish system is slight different. For a degree like a BA. You usually do that for three years to get the BA. You then do another one year to get the honours title.

Had to average above 50% in all 2nd and final year modules, and not fail (<40%) any 2nd or final year module. Thats for my BSc (Hons) anyway.

The grading process will be described in your undergraduate handbook (or equivalent)

For mine it was not failing any units during year 2 and 3.

Presumably its 3 years for degree, extra year for Hons, extra year ontop (i.e 5 years) for masters?

In Scotland you can leave Uni after 3years with an Ordinary degree ie Bsc BEng etc, for a honours degree you need to do a further year to get Bsc (hons). For a masters Msc you would need to do another year ie 5years

Standard degree in Scotland is 4 years, not 3. Generally means that if you come out with an ordinary degree that you didn't complete the full course.

Where I went (Southampton), anything from a 1st to a 3rd was an Honours degree. You could then get a 'pass' and anything below that was a fail.

I'm sure its on a credits system, for example each module = 20 credits, and you need x many credits for a degree, and x many more for honours degree. Hence, if you fail a few modules, you may still qualify with a basic degree with no honours.

Yep thats pretty much right, all students who get a 1st to a 3rd get honors, if you don't get a 3rd you get a ordinary degree.

Most universities have a system where you have to get a certain number of, for example, 1st results in your exams (so over 69) and as well have reached a certain aggregate total.

Do first years ever count? Obviously you need to pass your first year, but do marks ever count?

Some University and some course will count your first year marks, but from my knowledge it is the minority.

Nevertheless a good First year mark can do you a lot of good especially if your looking for Work experience during the Summer, especially for law!!

I personally I'd of worked a tad harder and got a 2:1 in my first year :<
