Horlicks- the drink that is supposed to help you sleep....does it?

It has no soporific effects, however it may relax you, thus allowing you to sleep easier. Unfortunately, all of the chemicals which can put you to sleep have a tendency to be addictive, or at the least have some nasty side effects. Which is why they are almost universally prescription drugs.

anaesthetist?

The Wikipedia article says that it doesn't help you sleep, the only thing it might do is stave off hunger over night.

However it cites the Daily Fail as the source...

I understand that hot milk can aid sleep though...?

The hunger thing actually does make sense. Protein from milk (caesan) takes a lot longer to digest than normal (whey) protein. Caesan kind of gloops up in the stomach, giving it something to work on, and a slow release of protein.

Many bodybuilders have a caesan shake, or cottage cheese before bed for this very reason.

Oh, i wasn't disputing the hunger thing. I was disputing Wikipedia saying there were no other benefits.

But, I'm pleased to posted anyway, because I learned some more trivia!

Get yourself some tryptophan and put it in the horlicks. That will make you sleep.

It's the amino acid that's in turkey that makes you sleepy after christmas dinner.

I have huge trouble sleeping at night, and being a jobless student, I often find myself still asleep at 1 or 2pm, after not sleeping till 7 or 8am.

I've come to realise, the days I sleep early are the ones where i've not had a head full of computers and internet or games. Plan when you wanna go to bed and get off the computer an hour before and just wind down. Don't try to force sleep though, as you'll end up laying there for hours rolling around.

I am a huge listener and lover of dark ambient music. I normally stick a playlist on the computer and go to sleep with it on. I tried ipod, but headphones are awkward while in bed.

Screw all these drugs and crappy hot chocolate stuff, you don't need to fill your body with it.

One thing I can do sometimes, is also wind down with a film or tv show and watch it in bed. Not something new that I've not seen before that will make me want to pay full attention, but like re-watching episodes of Scrubs I've seen time and time again, or a film I know like the back of my hand. Just while watching, if you feel a bit drowsy just turn away from the tv and try to go to sleep. Perhaps not good for the electricity bill, unless you leave your computer on all night anyway (like I do), but I actually find it easier to go to sleep and be asleep while there is sound or something in my room.

The other night I fell asleep watching a some hour long tv program i'd already seen, but then once it had ended my computer went to sleep, now an imac in sleep mode is deadly silent, and the silence actually woke me up as it's weird for me. Maybe you'll find you sleep better with sounds around you too.

This is basically my life now, its the only way I can go to sleep at a respectable time.

Horlicks tastes terrible and does nothing for me but hey I always had trouble sleeping and nothing off the shelf works on me. Infact some of the less strong prescription stuff failed on me too but I haven't bothered with going for anything stronger, usually just try and fix it by exhausting myself. Another tip though which may sound strange is to keep your feet warm, can never fall asleep with mine cold. Apparently there is some merit behind it, your body can stop warming itself up to compensate for a cold body part (ahem) and instead starts lowering the body temperature which is what naturally occurs when you're falling asleep.

EDIT:

Ah someone as messed up as me, I'm same as my Dad and always struggle to fall asleep in silence. That could have course could have something to do with the fact that I suffer from tinnitus so re watching that episode of Scrubs is more appealing that the sound of ringing bells :p
