Other than the obvious (hornby.com), can anyone recommend some stockists of Hornby trainsets? I'm looking to buy one as a present for Christmas, and I would have headed to Beatties if the place still existed!

TIA,

Michael.

I googled all of those too, but none of them looked very 'reputable'. However, I understand that it is a niche market, so websites may not be very flashy.

Anyone remember their 'and an Intercity 225 for Christmas' campaign?

That ad really drummed it into me and my parents bought me a set for xmas that year, got loads of other cool stuff trains and scenery things too :D That must have been about 10 years or so ago

Haha - just looked at your location.

Modelzone on Grainger Street.

The third floor in Fenwicks has a franchise (Scalextric too ;)).

Toys R Us at the Metro Centre.

www.goldstarstockists.com - Awesome model shop for both mail order and rl service
www.southamptonmodelcentre.com - As above really, great shop.

Both offer decent prices mott.

Just do what my Dad does!... (he's a MODEL RAILWAY - Not Train set - Nut!!)... Go into your local Newsagents... Pick up a copy of 'Model Railways' or 'Railway Modeler' and have a look through the Ads!... :)

The websites won't look very reputable - most of the shops are small one or two man band affairs and websites are an afterthought not the cornerstone of their business.

Buy with confidence irrespective of tacky looking website.

and then your parents gave it all to me :D and then mum chucked it because of the rat :(

DON'T get Hornby, had nothing but neverending trouble with them

Get a Hornby kit so you get track and stuff but buy a Bachman train - they are superb.

I agree, most model shops aren't massive e-tailers and so wouldn't be able to spend large sums of money on their online shops. I would buy in confidence from any of them.

The newer stuff is a whole lot better than it used to be, but I admit they do still tend to use undersized motors. Don't touch a Hornby tender drive loco with a bargepole though- Those are nothing but trouble  (All the newer models are back on loco drive, but there are still far too many tender drives)

Personally though, from reading through your post a little more, I would go & buy the track etc. separately- Any decent model shop should be able to reccomend the track bits you want, and you can also get a 'proper' controller (The Hornby set one is again a little rubbish)- There I would reccomend a Gaugemaster; Again find at one of the shops reccomended above.
The Hornby sets are fine for the plugin & go factor, but IMHO, not for anything else.

Have a look here. Antics have a shop in plymouth where I get some RC stuff, they have a selection of railway stuff, although I dont know how good it is. :)
