Hi

As some of you know I am 23 and work in IT. My job takes me abroard quite a lot- sometimes for several months at a time. I have been working for my company for exactly 1 year now and have probably spent about 7-8 months of the year working away from home. When I am in the UK I work from home.

I currently live at home with my mum near Bath (Having spent the previous 4 1/2 years living in rented due to uni/ temporary jobs etc). I was at Uni in Sheffield and this is where pretty much all my good freinds live. I regularly go up and visit, but at 200 miles (or about 3 hours) its bit of a pain having to get up there all the time. I don't really have that many freinds at all down here any more (as I was away for so long and most of them have moved on etc) and the ones I do have are nowhere near as good as the ones I have in Sheffield- they're not really my kind of people any more, plus all bar one have settled down with long term girlfreinds, started buying houses etc.

Whenever I am up there we always have excellent nights out and just have a blast in general (Just like uni days :) ). Anyway he said that one room in his rented house would be available in June as the girl is probably moving in with her best mate and he has asked me if I want to take it. The rent is only £36 per week and I earn very good money for someone of my age, so affordability isn't an issue. If I had a 'normal' job where I went into an office every day etc I would definately take it.

The other issue is that after living away from home for so long I struggle back here because of mums being mums, my younger siblings arguing, not having your mates around 99% of the time, etc etc.

Do you think it is worth the move to Sheffield considering I won't be there for half of the year (and won'tsee them regardless of whether I am living there or not? Its a pretty difficult situation for me.

Would do it in a heartbeat, £36 a week rent, that's ridiculously cheap! Can't really see a downside tbh, only thing I suppose is would your flatmate be happy essentially living on his own for months?

There are 4 of us in the house. The rent is £36 as the house isn't in the best condition (I lived there for a year though and it was fine for me). The fact that I will be throwing away £36 per week when I am abroard (for over half the year probably) and not seeing my mates anyway (When its the whole reason I am thinking of doing this) puts me off a bit.

Umm sounds like a good idea to me... only a few things to bear in mind:
You work from home so you will be using one room as your office bedroom etc, is that enough space for while your there?

Nothing stopping you still spending time at home a bit while your home anyway.

Is your stuff going to be safe if left in the room while your abroad? - Going to be a right pain if you have to move it all back to your mum everytime you are going on a trip else.

Bottom line sounds like it could be a blast, if your looking for an opinion then mines go for it!

Well I would be taking the attic which is actually 2 rooms so could have an office and a bedroom.

Safety is a bit of a concern: The house has been burgled before and I have a lot of stuff (Another PC, expensive Solaris server that my company has let me borrow, ~£1,000 Hi-Fi and so on), not to mention if someone nicked my work laptop whilst I was out at the pub or something- that would be a disaster!

Like I said before-its the rent thing that puts me off. The other thing I considered was buying a house up there and having some of my freinds live there and pay me rent. They were happy to do this but it opens up lots more issues, and houses round that part of Sheffield are expensive!

Ok so look at it this way it's £145 a month for an office and room, how much money do you already spend travelling up to Sheffield and back? And how many hours do you spend travelling? Add up your hourly wage for the travelling time then add what you are spending in travel costs... whats the difference in the cost of the room and your costs already?

its not just that though.... there is council tax, utility bills, etc. Well the contract doesn't end 'til July so that is the soonest I could do it anyway so I have a while to think about it :)
