I am needing to build a machine for my gf since getting her into playing World of Warcraft and wanting mine back hehe and wonder what you think of the following kit list? Would hope to get most, if not all parts from OcUK so prices here for stuff towards bottom is for indication only at moment...

Total cost approx £1620 (although about 3 quid is an extra chipset fan for my machine ;)

It will be used for gaming, some work stuff and I would like to overclock it for fun :) hope to be able to get to around 2.9ghz plus - any chance? I would also like at some point in future to upgrade to sli with an extra 7900gt perhaps.

Would love to know what people reckon and also what you would put different? Could I build a dual core opteron for around the same price do you think?

Finally - last chip i bought was a retail one with ref heatsink and fan - if i am buying the OEM chip and and arctic pro do i need to buy some thermal paste as well? (nOOb question i know hehe)

open to suggestions on alternative spec or cpu. Will a dual core machine show much benefit if not being used for multiple applications at once?

^yep^ And go dual core on the cpu if i was you, maybe a 3800 oem and clock it. I have a 4200 @2.8 on a pro 64 cooler :) the rest is fine.
 
Get rid of all the gay lights and that will drop the price....


Also the DFI Expert board is a complete waste of money unless planning to go SLI and if you are don't get a 7900gt.

A single x900xt 512mb will be faster than 2 7900gt's SLI'd

I'd have to agree... You would be mad to spend 1600 notes and NOT get a dual core CPU. The 4400+ is a damn good CPU out the box and I believe can be clocked a further 500-600MHz without much trouble*.

*Based on preliminary research - I am getting a 4400+ and looking into its overclockability, as such I may be a little off or way wrong lol :p

If you wanted to save a little money you could go for a lower end X2 and clock it, but you would be missing out on 2MB L2 Cache. The decision in the end however is yours.

The X1900XTX is a fine card, but you can also get the cheaper X1900XT and clock it. I dont know if you can get it to XTX speeds but I am almost definately sure it can get close!

The rest of Monster's spec seems fine to me... as for the "gay" lights - thats completely down to user taste :D

at least this buys a dual core opteron which would hopefully be nice overclocker, even on air, plus a 20in wide screen monitor.... mmmm dilemna hehe

The Redline will be extremely excessive unless you're a serious clocker and IMO is not good value for money. Yea it'll do 3-3-2-8 @ 250mhz, but so what. The OCZ I put in the spec will do 2-3-2-5 @ 200mhz and probably up to around 225mhz, and would probably not be far behind at 250mhz. You can always run the ram on a divider anyway!

Should be a good clocker on air, the Freezer Pro is good but the Scythe Ninja is better.

For the money the 20" widescreen is more for your money than a std 19" TFT.
 
Ditch the side panel and light. Light MM said get standard 3200 memory, but a 20" 16:10 is good :) no need for a floppy anymore, if you need card reader get them seperatly (external) so can use on any machine.
 
after much soul searching (and discussion in which she wishes to keep the lights and side panel sorry folks...) this is what i am thinking of going for - was a toss up between the 7900gtx and x1900xtx but i am used to Nvidia and their drivers.

aye - had originally started with a DFI expert - but what with one thing and another hehe - may have to try and persuade gf of value of that although i got stung on my machine - got an asus a8n sli deluxe and 1 6800gt with a view to getting another a short while afterwards - now the card is unavailable it seems so i can keep the board and have to get 2 cards - ouch or stick with what i have on my winnie 3500+ current rig (this build is for gf though i hope to play on it as well lol).
