How are Santander allowed to take over everything??

Finally, I want to bank with a BRITISH bank, not a Spanish, German, French, Nigerian or whatever. Whats wrong with that?

Lack of a logical argument as to why you want that.

If the parent company of a British banking entity is headquartered in Spain then why should that in itself bother you? What difference does it make to you personally, as a customer, where their HQ is based.

Do you have a VISA or Mastercard? Are you bothered by the fact that they're not 'BRITISH'?

If you were a HSBC customer and they moved their HQ from Canary Wharf to say Hong Kong - would you suddenly change banks?

anyone know what may happen to my mahoosive student overdraft ?

apart from that ive always found natwest horrible anyway. they treat me like theyre selling me a used car

At least in America they are strongly protectionist, and do all they can for US business. The same in China.

Since when is protectionism a great idea?

Also ref: your example - sure.... The US would never let a British company take over one of their companies or establish a large presence there.

I mean BP never took over AMOCO, its not really a major supplier to the US military, the big oil spill in the gulf never happened.....

Oh and one of America's (and the world's) largest banks could never have a foreigner as its largest shareholder. I mean a Saudi price couldn't possibly be the biggest share holder in citigroup.

Yeah you're right, the US doesn't do international trade and is still living in the 1930s

Or perhaps you're just being a bit jingoistic/simple minded.

That's not true. if you ring that number you have to get a branch transfer form which is for when you move house so your new local branch is also your sort code etc

I work for rbsg and i think it's a great move. Best customer service (rbs) joined with best products (santander) = awesome customer service.

Only bad part is that i have to wear red!!!

You wait till you inherit santanders computer systems

Then you'll be in hell, just like all the employees over at Alliance And Leicester are.

They were excellent under Alliance and leicester, but under the new santander system were powerless to explain why £650 disappeared out of my account, and could only offer me a re-assurance that it will "sort itself out eventually" They were equally as powerless to explain why a cheque banked on a saturday wouldnt be avaible till friday .... 13 days after it was banked !!!!!

Every person in the call centre around could be overheard dealing with people shouting at them, and one friend who works for them has explained all the managers have now left the shop floor and all call centre employees are forbidden from referring calls to a manager. All complaints will be made in writing, and they'll just receive a generated letter offering £30 cheque.

Good luck old chap ;)

Who cares... they pay a nice fat interest on my ISA.

good luck if you ever need it withdraw it. Woman on MoneySavingExpert forums tried to withdrraw her life savings from her savings account. £30,000 worth to be precise. They kept offering excuses, call backs, false promises etc..

After a month of them avoiding answering what was wrong she gave up and just went to her local branch and shouted and complained till they sorted it. She was there for hours while the branch employees rang all over the place sorting it out.

Yep, and the US are busily screwing the external sugar markets and their internal corn markets for that reason, with tariffs and whatnot. Odd for a country that is generally so staunchly capitalist.

I'm sure there are more examples of idiotic market abuse going on.

Cheers :) Turns out that I'm one of the 2M as I have a few accounts at the Plymouth branch so I'm requesting the forms to stick with NatWest. I'm glad I read this.

edit: maybe not, I put my sort code into the checker on the RBS site site and it says I'm sticking with them, happy days :)

Was your account opened in Scotland? As far as I'm aware all of the 16 sort codes (E&W) are switching and the 83 (Scotland) sort codes will remain RBS.

My father-in-law works for RBS/Natwest as a regional business manager. Half of his clients are about to get letters telling them that they are going to be moved over to Santander and therefore over to a new manager. Thats going to cause problems.

Problem is he cant tell them that its happening or he'll lose his job, and then they have to send in a letter detailing why they want to stay with Natwest and also detailing that in no way did my father-in-law tell them to do it because Santander are a useless bunch of turds (which in my experience with them, they are).

I went to a Santander branch to pay off my former Alliance & Leicester loan and after queuing for ages a disinterested man behind the counter told me I could not pay with my debit card. There was a card machine on the counter.

That's my only experience with them and it was **** poor. I wouldn't bank with them. I've been with Midland Bank/HSBC for over 20 years and they have been exemplary.

This has got my blood boiling I must admit.

I have been a loyal Natwest customer for many many years, and now some Spanish POS bank has perhaps "bought me" as a customer?

Yes dailyFail again I know, but I am genuinely ****ed off about this.

At least NatWest and RBS were properly British with some decent history.

I dont want anything to do with these greedy Spanish pests.

Is anyone else rather hacked off? Natwest have been brilliant with me ever since I have been with them. Not a single bit of trouble.

Why does it feel like British industry is being taken away from us against our will?

Just look at the Cadbury's/Kraft saga, and the fact that the French own a huge portion of our Electricity provision sector.

Im getting bloody fed up. Santander..... FFFFFFUUUUUU!!

Just LOL, do you know why these 'Greedy Spanish Pests' own these 'Great British' banks now?

It's because the 'Great British' banks were the greedy ones a few years ago, leveraging like money was going out of fashion, and may well have collapsed without Santander's investment.

This and the Germany thread are the first two of yours I have seen, but you look like an utter troll.

Oooh I missed this gem the first time around- If you want to try and talk about the world in a balanced and fair way, rather than just spouting off any old rubbish that fits your argument whether it's true or not, you probably want to do some reading first. I suggest starting here.

This thread has a distinct lack of thought for established British brands, institutions and their importance to our society and identity. Albeit, the latter isn't affected massively by them but they still are apart of what a lot of people would associate with Britishness (er like Lloyds of London for example). It's kinda sad that people really don't give one. Wouldn't people say that it's true that brands have shaped western culture enormously? (McDonalds, Coke...?).

Also, a massive Spanish company isn't going to have as much thought for the employees and customers compared to a British company, is it? Perhaps this has been proven by Cadburys thiang with Kraft Foods etcetc.

Mmm appears that if anyone has the above view(s) they appear to be tagged as a "disgusting ignorant racist bigot" by the PC crowd on here...

I think you're more likely to be tagged as economically naive.

British industry is screwed, and it's taken British brands with it.
