We were amazed when we flew to Cape Town a couple of years ago just how vast a continent it is. We hit the coast of North Africa reasonably quickly as you'd expect, and initially you think, wow, Africa already, even though we knew it was a 12 hour flight.
You just don't appreciate how huge it is, and how long it takes to get from the top to the bottom. What's even more surreal is the fact there is only a 1 hour time difference between the UK and South Africa, and at the airport we saw destinations which we have never seen before. We saw some scientists heading out to Antartica. It was sweltering 30 degrees plus when we arrived in January, to see this team of people in their extreme winter outfits, skis etc, the full monty. Was quite amusing to say the least.
