Right I have a old sound blaster live 5.1 sound card in my pc (Pc spec in sig)
I would like to somehow be able to connect my guitar to my computer as I believe there are loads of software stuff out there to play around with.

I am only learning the guitar at the moment. (Got a Yamaha Pacifica).

I use Guitar Pro and download loads of Tabs and play to those. Which I enjoy a lot.

I have this thing on the front of my computer. If i can use it for connecting my guitar in ? No idea..Got a AMP as well of course. Just interested in what would be the best way.

Thank you

Be prepared to get very confused. I made a thread just like this and got totally swamped with info that went straight over my head :( :o

Plug into the line in port on the disc drive plate thingy, all you need is a standard jack to jack guitar lead as far as I can see.

I don't know what free software there is though, speak to Sidewinder INC he might be able to sort you out :D ;)

If you already have guitar pro etc then the only other software i can think of would be the likes of amplitube or guitar rig. These are amp simulation/effects processors used for home recording. I tried messing around with these and without the right equipment they aren't much fun. If memory serves me right you record a clean part onto your computer and then use the software to add fx, amp modelling etc. In order to use it in place of a dedicated effects board, so that you can hear the effects as you play, you would need a fairly decent sound card with ASIO (Audio Streaming in and out) drivers but even then you could be prone to sound lag depending on your pc's spec. Another problem is you need a good line in signal for this which i don't think you would get straight from you guitar, you would need to boost it someway.

To be honest with you i reckon you would get more joy out of buying a line6 pod or similar of the bay and playing around with that.

Yes I have Guitar rig 2 and Amplitube.

Looking at the Line 6 toneports UX 1 & 2 now as they may be the best route I think.

Just was hopeing that the LINE IN on my Audugy 2 front bay box would suffice but it wont, too much crack, hissle, latency etc. shame though. Would have been perfect.

So may have to spend around £100 to sort it. Just dont fancy trying it and then finding out I dont like it after spending all that money.

Shame argos dont sell them with there 21 days money back no quibble policy ;)

Hay stop bitch slapping my thread ;)

Anyone got a toneport or something they dont want for a week, so i can see if I like the idea of connecting my pc to my guitar. ?

Hay you dont ask you dont get.

http://line6.com/rifftracker/

Its absolutely fantastic. I love the fact you can just dial in classic tones. Paul Gilbert's shred tone for the win! :D

Its so stupidly easy to create songs too using the rifftracker software. The ONLY let down is that if you want to do a cover song, the drums innevitably are going to be WAY off. Otherwise, 10/10!

i dont play guitar and have no idea if its a good option, but the xfi professional (with set top box thingy) can take guitar as input (i think)

Yeah the X-fi Elite Pro has a guitar port on it. I have used it but only with my acoustics. Probably not an option for you but it works! :)

It's possible to run 2 PCI soundcards simultaneously as far as I know, and configure in windows which one you use for certain things, it could be worth buying a cheap M-Audio PCI card (something like a delta 44 or audiophile 192.

very possible, but you'll have to keep the "windows sound" option shortcut somewhere handy as every time you want to do something different you'll need to change it :(
