Ok... so i did the update to allow the xbox the option to do 1080p. I just recently purchased a 40 inch 1080p sony bravia lcd and have it connected to the xbox 360 via the component cables. The TV has 2 hdmi ports but of course the xbox 360 has NO hdmi output.
How do I get 1080p?

Can you not change it in the display options

May be that you need to connect via VGA, but I'm sure I read 1080p worked via component for games at least.

You cannot through component as there is no 1080p standard ratified, 1080i is the highest component supports.

1080p is only through the VGA cable (1920x1080) resolution, progressive VGA.

Does your TV have a VGA or DVI/I input? If so you'll need to get the MS VGA cable and possibly a VGA to DVI dongle.

Was it the KDL40W2000? (or maybe the X?)

I wanna know the answer to this as well, as I'm going for the W in the new year,so wanna run my 360 through it as high as poss.

Err... my 360 is connected via component and I get the option to select 1080p thorugh the dashboard??? Granted, it doesn't work but I just figured thats cause my screen doesn't support it.

It does have a VGA input but I have read that still wont work for the sony bravia product line for some reason. Damn you MS.

Indeed the Sony Bravia will not accept 1920x1080 resolution via its VGA input.

Very few Tvs currently do.

Really though id expect you would notice very little difference from 1080i and 1080p. Particulary as your Display is a native 1080p panel so no scaling is involved.

Be nice to see some pics if you get a chance and a report if you notice much difference over the 720p output mode.

I have the same setup with the Sony 40x. We have to wait for the HDMI cable if one will ever exist!! It is putting me off the HD DVD drive.

It does look amazing tho, playing oblivion at the mo :D

It's supposed to be 1080p for games over component and VGA but only HD-DVD movies will get 1080p over VGA.

The 'F' range from Samsung accepts 1080p over VGA. Maybe Sony deliberately left out 1080p VGA support to prevent 360 owners from being able to get 1080p?

It also accepts 1080p over component too. My mate just got the 40" F71 last monday. HD-DVD movies will switch to 1080i over component when you play them (though the xbox doesn't tell you this), but games will be output in 1080p. TBH, i couldn't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p setting in game, except for some taring in Dead Rising when set to 1080p.

Here's a post from the avforums:

I connected the Xbox360 up via VGA and set it to 1920x1080. Success!

The KDL40W2000 *DOES* accept a 1080p signal over VGA, HOWEVER when it identifies itself over the VGA connection it does not specify this mode as being available, additionally it claims the mode is unsupported in a little message to the bottom right of the screen... which is CLEARLY nonsense because two clicks of the select button and it goes away leaving the Xbox360 picture in all its 1080p glory running perfectly well with what I will assume is 1:1 pixel mapping.

I have yet to experiment further, however; I am not entirely sure if the Xbox360 will let you CHANGE the VGA output to 1920x1080 when you connect it to a TV that does not specify it as available. I had connected mine previously to a Dell 2407WFP which had that mode, and then when I hooked it up to the Bravia it somehow seems to have remembered the setting and used it!
