How can people have bad holidays these days?

Take all those reivews lightly. As others have mentioned the legitimate reviews stand out. Other than that we seem to be a nation of whiners with 90% of people crying about stupid stuff - missing a towel, the weather (yes apparently rain is NOT supposed to occur at holiday destinations). Just skim the reviews and go and have fun.

Tripadvisor et al are often more trouble than they are worth. I used it a lot for my America trip and was initially put off loads of places by the comments.

It quickly became apparent that the majority of people who write reviews on trip advisors are halfwits who make everything seem far worse than it is - rating a hotel 1 star because they forgot a towel one day, etc etc.

its a skill, sifting through the ratings and reading the text to see what they actually say

Any without any info can just be disguraded and ignored, and the ones that go give a detailed reason why - it usually shows if its a daft reason or not -like not getting fresh towells for 2 days or something.

Even the good hotels get bad reviews - but usually they are very scarce and only for silly things.

What I thought at the time was the biggest gamble I ever made was booking a Grand Canyon flight. The company I went with in the end had over 60% negative reviews. Most of them were moans about everything from the weather to the time they waited at the airport to the flight to the other people on the tour etc. Many claimed the trip 'TOTALLY RUINED MY HOLIDAY'. But there seemed little choice, so I reluctantly went ahead with it.

And received probably the smoothest, best organised and most excellent tour run by the most polite staff I could ever have wished for.

Its a common phrase in business that if you have a bad experience you will tell many people, if you have a good one, you won't tell many people.

People will generally go on tripadvisor to have a moan if they hated something, rarely will they go on there to say omgz! best 1!!!

It seems that we have people who read Tripadviser and other sites like they read OCUK, in other words they skimp through without reading properly.
If 5/100 reviews say the food is crap I take no notice however if 95/100 said it was crap I wouldn't go.
If 5/100 said the room wasn't very clean once again I wouldn't take any notice but if 95/100 then I wouldn't go.
We have all seen people complaining on holiday and sometimes they have a valid point and other times just plain stupid.
The thing is that humans can get upset over the littlest things and even if resolved they still hold a grudge.
The daftest I heard were a couple who had still got their suitcases and they were moaning there were too many people round the pool.
The Manager pointed to a posh new hotel across the bay in Gran Canaria but told them it would cost another £1000 and they couldn't wait to leave.

Anyway, I think the customers reviews sites are a doddle to work through and to pick out the wheat from the chaff.

I went to Mexico a few years back before the Hurricane struck. It was a last minute booking, Thursday, then flew out on the Monday. Allocation on arrival, Mexico, never been never read up on it, didn't know where in Mexico it was, hell, we didn't even know what was in Mexico apart from some ruins etc.

Landed in Cancun and met up with the Rep who told us we were not on any list they had for any hotels. After at least an hour waiting we was told we would be going to X resort. We eventualy arrived and was gobsmacked. Awesome place. Needless to say we had a great 10 days even though the Americans flooded in during the last 4 days, must have been a vacation break time!!

When we got back I looked on various trip advisors and hotel review sites and the amount of negative comments about the complex we stayed at was shocking.

Bad food, rude staff, too many kids.. the list goes on.

There was a review posted during the time we was there, probably by someone whos holiday had finsihed before ours and they ranted about everything. I can honestly say they must have stayed at some top hotels in their time because nothing was positive.

I thought it was the best place I have ever been. Everything was amazing, the staff couldnt do enough for you, food top quality, rooms sparkled eveyday. Only downside was a storm for 3 days and the power cut out quite often but a deck of cards sat outside on the balcony with unlimited booze certainly washed away the hours.

I posted a review on one of the sites and rated it very highly. I think Americans have very high standards of places like this one and if they dont meet that mark they rip it to bits. The Americans hardly ever tipped for drinks etc. All inclusive at least tip a dollar for a drink, certainly cheaper than a bar in town etc. I gave the 5 lads n lasses in the bar we drank at every night $20 each on our last night the service they gave us was outstanding and I know how much they are on, its not a lot. Thier faces when we handed the money over made the holiday even better..

Embarrassingly, we went to the Club Amur, Turkey this year which was features on a watchdog style program..(that chap who goes around on the motorbike). We saw it two weeks after we got back.. couldn't believe it. Fortunately, they made massive improvements from the time the documentary was film to when we went. It wasn't a great place, a bit bargain basement.. and there were still a few problems but we came to expect what we got for the price we paid.

No expectancy = no disappointment.

My Sister In Law has just got back from 2 weeks in Corfu and said it was awful.
OK, you can't do much about the weather and they said it rained every day but at least you can do something about the accommodation.
For at least 10 years it has been virtually impossible to go somewhere without being able to read up on it first.
You pick your way through other travelers comments and come to a conclusion whether you think it's going to be OK or not.
I'm always shocked at the gimps on Holidays From Hell and Watchdog who complain because I can see all the information and bad reviews.
Some people just like to throw money away without any effort.

Rant over.

Actually DM I'm going to tenerife this autumn and it's been a right 'mare trying to find a good hotel.

5* hotels are either kid unfriendly or in the middle of nowhere in tenerife.

4* hotels range from ok to pretty much 2* cockroach ridden places.

After 3 weeks of reading trip advisor reports (many of which have very conflicting views) I have choosen my hotel. I know it's not going to be great but it ticks enough boxes.

I could go there and get a rubbish accomodation and hate the food and be annoyed because the swimming pool is not really heated enough or the place isn't really clean enough for MY standards.

Only time will tell.
