How can they get away with this?

Oh that's OK then. I never thought of it like that.

If there going to protect murderers with there silence then the lot deserve to be tried as if they committed the murders.
This was not a protest or a strike but a full on riot, The laws are the same in the US as has been stated here before.
Just because you don't like a law doesn't mean you can ignore it, these people are being punished for a herd mentality that lead to the deaths of a number of people, the fault lies at everyone in the "protests" feet.

This sounds like a line from someone who's seen the headline, read the summary and then not read anything else on what actually happened further.

So you believe the miners should be charged for the 34 deaths of their fellow workers that the police killed?

Sounds like you haven't read it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that if you were to charge at a man whose carrying an assault rifle whilst you're wielding a sharp and pointy object, then things probably aren't going to go your way.

Besides, what sort of trade union tells members to rock up to a strike armed, and then manages to hack, slash and stab 10 people to death in a week? Sounds like a reasonable bunch eh?

But to be honest the Police in South Africa have been getting away with killing people for years , Nothing new really is it , If you watch the video clip , the Police just before they start shooting dont seem to know what to do...they actually look like they are starting to panic ...then just open fire....as if there were no other options open to them....maybe they should be better trained in crown and mob control , my wife used to work with a woman who was born in SA..and she was saying that anyone pretty much can get job in the Police it's considered just about the most dead end job there is , you dont even have to be able to read or write either ..as long as you can weald a baton and shoot a gun...you pretty much set

The video shows a group of worked up thugs charging towards the police. Armed, the had lost two officers already to this group of people, they had every right to defend themselfs,

Don't worry, I'm sure the SA police are funded to the same level that our government would like to fund our police.

What does this have to do with charging 270 miners with the murder of the men the police killed? If the police acted in self-defence it wouldn't be murder would it?

My Other half is south african and her nephew works in the gold mines and some of the storys i have heard are crazy. I really feel for these guys the government there is unbelievable so corrupt how that zuma is in power is beyond me, every south african i speak to hates the guy.*

I'm not saying I agree with the charges but, if you look at the occurrences from a pure cause and effect viewpoint, there is some logic to them.

Hundreds of people armed with machetes, knives etc charge a considerably smaller number of police. The police would undoubtedly have been fearful for their lives. It is inevitable, therefore, that they would defend themselves - as would be anybody's right - by using such means as are available to them. As a result, 34 people died. The rioters will have known the police were armed. The rioters deliberately charged the police. The rioters must have known the likely response of the police. Isolated logic, ie looking simply at the situation itself, leads to a viewpoint that the rioters are responsible for the deaths through their actions. Ergo they should be charged in relation to the deaths.

Of course, you cannot look at the events in isolation but, clearly, it is not so ridiculous a premise as some might believe.
